It just sort of takes your drives and starts configuring it. The problem was that it just sort of starts doing this without telling you what it's doing. It chugged along for a good while and finally completed.
I only have two drives in it and using it for RAID 1. But, it was only later that I explored the apps and figured out it did its job by configuring for RAID 1. I wish the docs would have described what to expect and what it was doing and tell me a little more about the apps.
Now that it's working, seems to be working good.
Best part about this unit is that it has the display that shows the ip address and space used. This is the only unit at this price that has the display panel. It's a good benefit to know the IP address so if you ever have network problems, you can always find the DHCP assigned address. However, I wish I could configure the IP address from the display panel.
The display cycles through the time, space and ip address showing each for a few seconds. The bottom button advances the display forward. Couldn't figure out what the opt button does.
I haven't figured out how to get the wake-on-lan functional. The unit seems to be always on. The fan is mildly noisy and never seems to go off. So, from that perspective, it's just like my 6 year old iomega NAS w/o WOL.
There's a lot of apps and a few useful ones, like the one that allows the unit to copy stuff into the NAS from my other NAS. I immediately used this app to setup background jobs to copy stuff into it from my various other locations.
minus 1 star for crappy documentation and WOL that seems to be non functional.
The replacement unit is already setup and running in 1/10 of the time.
