Know how your Hidesign bag is made
Hidesign bags are handcrafted with vegetable tanned , hand dyed leathers, and this makes every piece one of a kind. The true beauty of a Hidesign bag lies in its uniqueness which is due to our start-to-finish hand making process.
Your bag is made using Hidesign’s vegetable tanned leathers. To highlight the natural texture and grain of the leather, it is rolled in wooden drums with vegetable oils and extracts made from bark of Wattle tree and Myrobalan seeds for several days. The leather absorbs the oil and extracts, which gives it a unique character– a deep, rich colour and long lasting strength – which is followed by dyeing and hand finishing using waxes and lacquer. No two hides have the exact same texture or color because it boils down to the individual grain pattern and source of the hide. The leathers are then hand cut and hand assembled piece by piece by a small group of artisans. Hidesign also makes its own brass rings and buckles. At the atelier every day around 4 pm the furnace is cranked up to 1,700 degree F, which melts the brass cubes into a golden, illuminating lava. A pair of skilled hands makes moist sand cast moulds, into which this molten brass is poured. These moulds are broken to retrieve the brass fittings, which are then polished and finished before they adorn the leather product.
From the manufacturer
The Hidesign Story
From its artisan roots of a two man workshop to a company of 3000 spread all over the world, Hidesign has stayed true to its strong heritage of craftsmanship and innovative design. Hidesign stands out for the sensuous naturalness of its high quality leathers and the smooth soft glow of its solid brass fittings in the leather goods it handcrafts. The brand stands for its commitment to innovation and the spirit of adventure that the products imbibe.
Hidesign has mastered the skill of tanning hides into premium leathers, using highly skilled techniques of vegetable tanning, our leathers only get better with age.
Craftsmanship at Hidesign has always been slow. Vegetable tanning, hand cutting, hand polished brass fittings, small group production, hand rubbing and waxing each bag till they glow are the norm at Hidesign.
Innovation and Design
Hidesign has remained committed to innovation through the years. A leader in the research and use of vegetable tanned leathers, Hidesign has constantly strived to reinvent age-old crafts that are disappearing in a highly industrialized world. With an international design team based out of Paris, London and Pondicherry, Hidesign is committed to designing leather accessories that are one of a kind.
Hidesign has preserved the age-old tradition of vegetable tanning leathers that adds a soft glow to them. Our leathers are full grain (they have not been corrected to hide defects) have minimal colour or pigments to cover the leather’s natural beauty.
