About the Author

The author, Clyde H. Stagner, is a retired Captain, Chemical Corps, US Regular Army. His first radiation experience was as security for the first nuclear reactor in 1948 at the Argonne National Lab. In 1961, his assignment was Chairman, Nuclear and Radiological Defense Committee, US Army, Chemical Corps School, where he was awarded the US Army Blue Sky award. In 1962, the Captain was the Department of Defense Radiological Safety Officer for nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Upon retirement with MOS 8 7330, Instructor, Nuclear Effects Officer, in 1964, his experience increased as a radiation technician who surveyed watch repair facilities, dental x-ray offices, microwave ovens, color TV emissions, and antenna emissions for the Pinellas County Health Department in Florida. In 1968 and 1969 the US Bureau of Radiological Health appointed Stagner a consultant. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in energy conversion in 1970, Stagner became Supervisor of Licensing of Nuclear and Regulatory Affairs for the Florida Power Corporation during the construction of their first nuclear power reactor at Crystal River, Fla.
