The first thing about this novel that caught my attention was its plot. A simple one yet an unique and less explored one. The plot and the narration compliments each other in a way that keeps the readers guessing the kind of ending that the plot would eventually offer. Even in quite a straightforward scenario, the author keeps certain cards in her hands that could and does change things. I really liked the way the author has handled the plot.
Next comes the characters and there are a handful of them. They are all believable and relatable. The author has given each character a role to play that is essential to the plot and each of them have some distinct quirks. Ananya, the protagonist, stands out among all of them though. She is a reflection of modern woman who is good at taking up responsibilities and then multi tasking - a woman with a successful career and a happy family life. She is also quite courageous as she stands up for what is right even when that could probably bring her whole life and her carefully constructive world down.
Finally the author delivers the exact amount of emotions through her words. She has finesse in her language that touches the reader’s heart. It would have been easy to over deal the amount of emotions in this novel but the author has managed to find the right balance.
Also, I am not a person who puts much stock by a book’s cover. But I will admit that this cover attracted me immensely. The emotions that the book delivers is promised in the drawing of the woman on the cover with her many hues.
The story revolves around Anaya, Nishith, and Varsha. All the three characters seem believable. The character, I loved was Olivia, Anaya's daughter. Purba has beautifully described a child's love for her parents.
Though slow in the beginning, the pace increases as the story unfolds. The story moves back and forth between Anaya's past, and the present with clear demarcation between the two.
The hidden letters is a women's fiction with a bit of mystery. But, men should also read it to understand the worth of women in their life.
‘The Hidden Letters’ is the story of Anaya, top-most Author in India, with a global recognition. In her forties she is living in Singapore with her husband Nishith (a doctor) and her eighteen year old daughter Olivia. The story opens at an event n Kolkata where Anaya receives a prize. Later in Kolkata she comes across her Varsha, her cousin and best friend from her past. She tries to talk to her, but Varsha don’t even recognize her. From her attending Nurse Anaya learns that Varsha suffers from Alzheimer’s and is unable to remember anything. Instantly, Anaya is filled with a guilt. She just cannot take her mind off Varsha even after returning to Singapore and meeting her husband. She believes that it is her fault for the condition Varsha is in. Anaya thinks about the letters hidden in a safe written by Varsha years ago.
The story goes back in time when Anaya met Nishith for the first time while living with Varsha. In beginning she thinks Nishith is just a rude, careless goon, but as time progresses the three of them become best friends. Eventually Anaya falls in love with Nishith.
Now what’s in the letters? What exactly happened between the three of them? Why Anaya blames herself for Varsha’s condition? I am sure you have all those questions. But… I will not answer. You’ll have to read the book to find the answers.
