Vagh Pratap Singh aka Captain. An extraordinary and charming conman. Disguised as an Art Professor Mr. Albert Rueben he was hunting down the famous potrait The Poppy Flowers by Vincent Van Gogh. This book is all about the thrilling journey the Captain is going to embark upon, his past and how he ended up as a conman. . . . .
The Heist Artist by Vish Dhamija is utterly thrilling. The planning and plotting to steal the painting, the cat and mouse chase, the twists and turns will keep you hooked to the book till the end. The pace of the narration and the writing style was top notch and humour parts were absolutely witty. The sequence of the events were nicely linked, the past and present connection weren't confusing at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but some parts were kind of stretched with excess description and the ending part was a bit cold compared to the thrill in the rest of the book.
I've been meaning to read this book since I first came across it on bookstagram simply because the title intrigued me. The blurb made my expectations sky rocket and fortunately, it didn't disappoint.
Vagh pratap singh aka The captain is a a con man who has sustained his life doing thefts and smugling, now in his forties, he's given a proposal to steal a Van Gogh masterpiece which is already missing, by a politician. The deal is tempting but the risk is higher than ever before. With the police already hot on his trail, the captain must execute the plan with precision as there's no room for any mistakes.
With the restless politician nagging and the police who's behind him like a hungry predator, the question is would he able to perform the greatest and probably the most dangerous heist of his life?
First of all, I'd love to comment on the fact that the object in question, the thing that can make or break the deal, The Van gogh painting is indeed missing in reality. I love that the plot was based on something that's actually true. Since I'm a lover of art and just a naturally curious person, I absolutely loved the trivia's the author provided us with even though I already knew some of them.
I also enjoyed all the pop culture refrences as they didn't feel out of place but actually complimented the theme. The godfather one for example.
The plot of the story is simple yet complicated as you don't know what to expect. It's unpredictable and enthralling. The chase, the tension, the planning everything was narrated so exceptionally that I couldn't help but get immersed in the story.
Vagh's character is my favorite. We're given an insight in his past life which made him look more than just a con doing his job. It made his character more three dimensional. I also love the way he's so calculative and brilliant at everything he does, the first car chase for example, His predictions and deductions and his observant nature makes him just the perfect protagonist and narrator.
The writing style is simple and yet captivating. It's the reason why I was on edge the whole time I was reading it.
The suspense build up was amazing and it made me anticipate more of what's gonna happen next.
The climax was underwhelming to say the least. All the build up falls a little flat as we approach the climax as it becomes predictable and you can feel yourself loosing interest because at this point you know whats gonna happen and hence every word feels stretched.
Although I love the writing style, I felt there were too many descriptions of things that didn't matter which was distracting.
The storyline is great but the authors ability to keep you hooded falters time and again because of irrelevant descriptions.
All and all, it's a great thriller and it's enjoyable but it could've been better if it wasn't for the too long descriptions and the poorly delivered climax.
Being a criminal or a conman is bad. Every single one of us knows that. But why do people turn out to be criminals ?? Is it the cruel nature of the society that takes advantage of the situations and turns them into one ? Or is the need and greed of the individual itself that leads them to the path of crime ? Only the man himself knows. But are they really bad ?? What would be their perspective of the story ?? It's unknown to the world unless we make an effort to know it. I have said all of this because the book 'The heist artist' is one that is a story of conman and criminals, narrated by a lead thief himself.
The book 'The heist artist' by author Vish Dhamija is a story of a heist as it says in the title itself and cover perfectly shows what the material of robbery is. The cover is attractive and very close to the story as includes the material being robbed and the title is a perfect suit to the story. Coming to the writing style of the author, it's interesting that the narration is carried out completely in the point of view of the thief rather than the point of view of third person.
The language used is simple and easily understandable and doesn't bother you with complex vocabulary. The flow of the story is smooth and goes at a medium pace. The highlight of the story is the continuous turn of events that keep the readers hooked to the book and makes it a page turner. Also the character development and the chronology of events and the work put on at taking care of minute details and places is commendable.
There are a few drawbacks in the book. The major one is the predictability of the events. The events that take place are quite easily predictable after a few pages read. Also the story is focused too much on travel and escaping the trails and plans of travel which takes out the thrill after some time. There could have been a lot more interesting things which could have been added and made it more thrilling. The additional and too much detailing of a few elements coming in the story could also have been avoided which could have made it much more interesting read.
Overall it's an amazing and thrilling story of a robbery and escape after it. If you are a fan of thriller and enjoy adventurous books, this is a must for you.

Vish Dhamija is my favourite author. His books are always filled with the finest details, embedded perfectly with right words, correctly planned plot. ‘THE HEIST ARTIST’ is an unusual creation of Vish Sir. Like his previous master pieces this one is not about the court room dramas or twist & turns of legal process and proceedings. ‘THE HEIST ARTIST’ is a finely blended story of a Master Conman of the country, a Shrewd Politician and a Ruthless Gangster.
The protagonist Vagh Pratap Singh aka ‘Captain’ is a Master Conman who wants to finish one last job A Last Heist before he retires is hired by a shrewd and greedy politician Udham Kumar to search and steal the Original world famous painting “Poppy Flower” by the famous Vincent Van Gogh. Well the painting is estimated for over 200 million dollars and is missing from over a decade from a museum in Egypt and now its believed to be in India, soon the protagonist ‘Captain’ finds that unfortunately its in the possession of the very ruthless and dangerous gangster Bipin Patel. Also his past deeds have come back and an honest police officer HariMohan who's already chasing him(Captain’s) and is back after his flesh & blood. HariMohan wants to handcuff the Captain and bring him to justice. The book ‘The Heist Artist’ starts with a Map on the very first page, Readers Please make sure you have good look at it first. You will really thank me for this tip. As the story goes by the reader will really enjoy the hurricane of fortunate and unfortunate events that passes by the protagonist to complete his last contract ‘The Heist’ which will be his last if he stays alive or .... The whole story made me re’live the Thrill which I had in watching the movies, ‘The Great Train Robbery’, ‘The Italian Job’- both Old & New, ‘The Oceans’ series, Tower Heist, ‘The Inside Man’ etc. I was anxious to complete the book as soon as I could, The moment I started it, I was not able to keep it unless I was completely done with it. Many scenes were so catchy that for hours together I sat on edge of my recliner. Back to the book... Will the Captain be able to reach the painting ? Can he steal the painting from the gangster’s den ? Can he plan the successful heist ? And most important what will happen to him after the Heist if he succeeds in completing it?
