Vagh Pratap Singh aka Captain. An extraordinary and charming conman. Disguised as an Art Professor Mr. Albert Rueben he was hunting down the famous potrait The Poppy Flowers by Vincent Van Gogh. This book is all about the thrilling journey the Captain is going to embark upon, his past and how he ended up as a conman. . . . .
The Heist Artist by Vish Dhamija is utterly thrilling. The planning and plotting to steal the painting, the cat and mouse chase, the twists and turns will keep you hooked to the book till the end. The pace of the narration and the writing style was top notch and humour parts were absolutely witty. The sequence of the events were nicely linked, the past and present connection weren't confusing at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but some parts were kind of stretched with excess description and the ending part was a bit cold compared to the thrill in the rest of the book.
I've been meaning to read this book since I first came across it on bookstagram simply because the title intrigued me. The blurb made my expectations sky rocket and fortunately, it didn't disappoint.
Vagh pratap singh aka The captain is a a con man who has sustained his life doing thefts and smugling, now in his forties, he's given a proposal to steal a Van Gogh masterpiece which is already missing, by a politician. The deal is tempting but the risk is higher than ever before. With the police already hot on his trail, the captain must execute the plan with precision as there's no room for any mistakes.
With the restless politician nagging and the police who's behind him like a hungry predator, the question is would he able to perform the greatest and probably the most dangerous heist of his life?
First of all, I'd love to comment on the fact that the object in question, the thing that can make or break the deal, The Van gogh painting is indeed missing in reality. I love that the plot was based on something that's actually true. Since I'm a lover of art and just a naturally curious person, I absolutely loved the trivia's the author provided us with even though I already knew some of them.
I also enjoyed all the pop culture refrences as they didn't feel out of place but actually complimented the theme. The godfather one for example.
The plot of the story is simple yet complicated as you don't know what to expect. It's unpredictable and enthralling. The chase, the tension, the planning everything was narrated so exceptionally that I couldn't help but get immersed in the story.
Vagh's character is my favorite. We're given an insight in his past life which made him look more than just a con doing his job. It made his character more three dimensional. I also love the way he's so calculative and brilliant at everything he does, the first car chase for example, His predictions and deductions and his observant nature makes him just the perfect protagonist and narrator.
The writing style is simple and yet captivating. It's the reason why I was on edge the whole time I was reading it.
The suspense build up was amazing and it made me anticipate more of what's gonna happen next.
The climax was underwhelming to say the least. All the build up falls a little flat as we approach the climax as it becomes predictable and you can feel yourself loosing interest because at this point you know whats gonna happen and hence every word feels stretched.
Although I love the writing style, I felt there were too many descriptions of things that didn't matter which was distracting.
The storyline is great but the authors ability to keep you hooded falters time and again because of irrelevant descriptions.
All and all, it's a great thriller and it's enjoyable but it could've been better if it wasn't for the too long descriptions and the poorly delivered climax.
🔥 The heist artist ⭐ A thriller novel which won't dissapoint you if you pick it up! The story is very nicely composed and the smooth narration makes it more indulging. . My love for fine arts made me more curoous about the story and also let me tell you something about the story. The main focus of the story is on "stealing van gogh painting" yes that very famous artist(impressionist) of "the night sky" and sunflower . So if you too are an art lover then it will be more interesting for you and if you have no interest in it, don't wprry it still a great read. The good part of thriller is that it should be unpredictable. Yes this book was so. The suspense and plot was good, (specifically 7/10) . If I say something about the story-it would be the plot and composition which I'll applaud for and the character sketch but among them the plot could have been better and also it was a little more condensed. As I felt that there's a descent amount of filler in story. . At last as I've earlier said that this book won't dissapoint you untill and unless you read a very negative review which will play with your mind untill you read a positive one. Happy reading
Being a criminal or a conman is bad. Every single one of us knows that. But why do people turn out to be criminals ?? Is it the cruel nature of the society that takes advantage of the situations and turns them into one ? Or is the need and greed of the individual itself that leads them to the path of crime ? Only the man himself knows. But are they really bad ?? What would be their perspective of the story ?? It's unknown to the world unless we make an effort to know it. I have said all of this because the book 'The heist artist' is one that is a story of conman and criminals, narrated by a lead thief himself.
The book 'The heist artist' by author Vish Dhamija is a story of a heist as it says in the title itself and cover perfectly shows what the material of robbery is. The cover is attractive and very close to the story as includes the material being robbed and the title is a perfect suit to the story. Coming to the writing style of the author, it's interesting that the narration is carried out completely in the point of view of the thief rather than the point of view of third person.
The language used is simple and easily understandable and doesn't bother you with complex vocabulary. The flow of the story is smooth and goes at a medium pace. The highlight of the story is the continuous turn of events that keep the readers hooked to the book and makes it a page turner. Also the character development and the chronology of events and the work put on at taking care of minute details and places is commendable.
There are a few drawbacks in the book. The major one is the predictability of the events. The events that take place are quite easily predictable after a few pages read. Also the story is focused too much on travel and escaping the trails and plans of travel which takes out the thrill after some time. There could have been a lot more interesting things which could have been added and made it more thrilling. The additional and too much detailing of a few elements coming in the story could also have been avoided which could have made it much more interesting read.
Overall it's an amazing and thrilling story of a robbery and escape after it. If you are a fan of thriller and enjoy adventurous books, this is a must for you.

( This coming from is a really big compliment , as l really enjoy those movies , and your book @ gave me those vibes . Congratulations sir ) Now coming back to the book , it's a story of Vagh Pratap Singh aka The Captain who is a con man doing petty jobs for various prominent people and politicians. However the new project which he receives from Uddam Singh seems to him as means to restart his life . The project consist stealing a famous painting and story is about how he accomplishes this task The storyline is interesting and filled with suspense . The narration is fast paced . The language used is simple and easy to understand . The characterisation is superb . The tittle and cover are appropriate . Overall it was a pleasure reading this book and I would it to all crime and thriller readers.
The Heist Artist is basically a thriller based book by Vish Damija. And I must say, it was one of my top mystery-thriller read this year.
The storyline is damn unique and focusses mainly on the Robbery of the very famous painting by Van Gogh by the 'Heist'. I am an fine arts enthusist, so this book was my niche.
With astounding and spellbinding narration with the point of view of the thief grabs the attention of the reader, whilst keeping glued to the book till it ends. The priority of fisrt person narration rather than third, gives the book an edge over other thrillers.
About the plot, it was pretty decent. But the charm of the book lost in the predictability of what is going to happen next. I mean, because of that the story felt un-interesting sometimes.
Overall, character development was superb and was really upto the mark !
The resemblence of the plot with the real world is what felt the most unique part of the book! This made the bokk shine aprt from other thrillers.
The writing style is gripping and lucid. The story flows woith great ease and effortlessly!
Suspense was well hidden till the appropriate time and secret unfolding schedule was appreciable!
Along with the predictable plot, the unnecessary details which felt dragging sort of decreased the suspense because of diversion to them.
Apart from that, everything was alright and this book really made me fall in love with this author's work. Will be picking up his other titles soon!

Review: To begin with cover is very descriptive. It gives a perfect highlight to the story. The story is very different and unique. The way storyline is described along with the real information makes it a very interesting read. Writing is simple and hence once you start with the book, the book becomes an instant page-turner. The story is medium paced and is very engaging. The book is a mixture of suspense, thriller and crime. If you love thriller and suspense this book is definitely a pick for you.
Who hasn't been interested in a good heist story in their entire lifetime?? I have researched about the best heist of the world till the date and went to the core of every police procedure. So I knew what i was expecting when i picked up "The Heist Artist" .
I love a good conman and no joke those "Ocean's" and "Dhoom" movies have hyped me up enough to read a lot of books about heists. The book by VISH DHAMIJA didn't let me down.
The Heist Artist starts from a map on the very first page. We are introduced to our conman aka "The Captain". Trust me his character is very fascinating and he won't let you down!
"The Offer" was a painting of Van Gogh worth millions.
"The Heist" is impossible. Or at least to say.... nope... impossible is the word. Our Captain is intrigued...expected of him exactly that.
Then we are introduced to various other characters with a Police who would do anything to get the evedence to put Captain behind the bars...for a long long long time.
I like these ambitious characters. They make everything a lot more fun.
The entire book is a very damn good to read with that map in the hand. Awesome experience and ohhh myyy god! Was it thrilling.
Overall without saying a lot about this book, because I don't, in my entire life, will ruin the fun for you which I loved about this book.
The story starts with Captain aka Vagh Pratap singh discussing the details of his next assignment with a politician Udhham Kumar who belongs to U.P. Captain was asked to steal the famous Van Gogh's last work of "Poppy Flowers". So how he is going to complete the mission?. While in that mission he told Uddham Kumar that he don't want any other peoply as accomplice. So Udhham Kumar allowed that but behind he also asked Sylvia to watch over him.
Captain changed his name into Albert Rueben. He started to work as a professor and gathered information and also almsost got the painting. But Udhham Kumar ordered his boys to kill him and get the painting. But Sylvia joined her hands with Albert Reuben which that shocked Udhham Kumar the most.
Now how will they escape from Udhham Kumar and his guys? Why did Sylvia joined with Albert? If it was a stolen painting where would they sell the painting?. Everything was answered in the upcoming pages in a interesting way.
This was full of twists and turns. Albert's flashback and Sylvia's flashback was unexpected twist. The flow was just amazing. Language of writing is simple and easy to understand. But some paragraphs are not necessary to undertstand the flow. Otherwise it's an interesting read and also a page turner too.
