The Headset Buddy says:
"I am very sorry the headset adapter you purchased was not what you were expecting. This is because you inadvertently purchased a counterfeit adapter through an unauthorized vendor.
There are currently only two authorized Headset Buddy vendors on Amazon - our own company, Webko, as well as Ace Digital Photo. All other vendors on Amazon.com are unauthorized sellers selling inferior, knock-off products.
We are actively working to remove these fraudulent listings. Also, we would like make you this offer: We will provide you with the actual Headset Buddy adapter for free! We will pay shipping. In exchange, we ask that if you like our product you will remove your negative review and update with a positive review. If you want to accept our offer, please email your contact information and..."
So I sent them my info and got the new adapter a couple of days later. The difference was like day and night.
The first adapter came in a cheap plastic bag - the real Headset Buddy came in a plastic package like you'd see on a rack in the store.
The first adapter didn't work - the new one works great. The wire is twice as thick and where it connects to the jack is well reinforced.
I plugged the new adapter into my 3rd gen iPod and made a couple of skype calls with the new adapter. The calls were clear with no static even when I shook the iPod vigorously.
Bottom line, the seller on this item when I went to write this new review is a fraudulent seller. Beware. If it doesn't say Webko above the picture, it's a ripoff. Click on more sellers and select Webko for the real item. I don't understand why Amazon allows this to happen.
- it works with the MICROPHONE on any 2.5mm mono headset. (until you've searched for years, you have no idea how profound this is)
- it works with the SOUND on any mono headset.
iPhones have a 3.5mm hole for headset and headphone usage. This adaptor has a 3.5mm end, so it works.
Most mono headsets have a smaller 2.5mm plug at their end. This adaptor has a 2.5mm hole, so it works.
I'll say it again: this tiny, well-made adaptor allows for MICROPHONE USAGE on any cheap mono headset you have that has a 2.5mm plug. It works on ALL iPhones (up through 5c and 5s). Yes, searchers, say it loud: kaloo kalay you've hit the motherlode. You may weep now, your frustration is over, and you can toss the 11 other non-mic-working adaptors you've purchased in your search and just use this one.
PS: the photos currently up on this item (as of August 16, 2014) are wrong wrong wrong. Why the manufacturer allows this is beyond my business imagination and I can only bang my head at the loss of income (it's thousands of dollars). The actual item you receive is a sealed package called The Headset Buddy, part no 01-PH25-PH35. No Google search will come up with the package, but if you head over to the manufacturer's site (headsetbuddy), you'll find this part number. It's red, very well made, and 5.5 inches long.
Amazon said they would take seller off the list and investigate the issue, they suggested I try a different vendor despite the dire warnings the the other ones are knockoffs. I posted a picture of what they are actually sending.
Long Tail contacted me and apologized for the error at Amazon, they sent me the actual adapter (free) directly and it is the correct one. I am trying to use this with a panasonic corded headset and there is still a problem with the sound quality as others hear it (there's always a buzz in the background unless I touch the iPhone) but with the actual LongTail adapter the audio is perfectly clear to me. The adapter is well built and doesn't look like its going to come apart any time soon.
