Product Description

“Nicely written dialog, choice humor, and a slowly evolving plot makes this first mystery in a new series a real winner”Library Journal

"The kind of novel that mesmerizes. Barer delivers tight, muscular prose, a laconic hard-boiled PI, and a plot that is as slippery as a well-oiled chicane. An utterly compelling narrative that will not disappoint."--Richard Godwin, author of Apostle Rising and Savage Highway

A paranoid recluse lures private eye author Jeff Reynolds into a complex web of deception where delusions are deadly, life after death can be hell and all roads lead to the McFeely Tavern. Several popular mystery writers, including G.M. Ford and Tony Fennelly, make cameo appearances in this clever and captivating private eye caper set in Walla Walla, Washington. Edgar Award winner Burl Barer brings us a private eye mystery unique and wondrous from the opening paragraph to the spectacular cinematic climax featuring one of the best plot twists in PI history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Jeff Reynolds 26 January 2016
By C. BRAZIL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is my first experience reading a Burl Barer book. Got the notice for this book from Wild Blue Press. I have short term memory loss so I figure I better write something before I forget what this book is about. :-)

I was hooked from the outset. The main protagonist, Jeff Reynolds is my kind of man! Mr Barer writes with such flair and humor, I found myself laughing out loud at times and cringing at the goings on other times. How delightful with its mixture of the dramatic and of Jeff Reynold's sarcastic humor. Of course, that humor comes from Mr Barer and projected into the character.

Told ya I'm not much of a writer. Can't wait for installment #2!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite a mystery, more like an adventure 31 January 2016
By B. McKee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Headlock is an entertaining story featuring author/private investigator Jeff Reynolds. His paranoid client wants him to find out whether his (the client's) father was murdered.

The plot gets a little complicated from there, and there is a sidebar of wrestling, but it's not difficult to keep the characters straight. There are many subplots that come together to form the whole.

I've never been to Walla Walla, but I have been to Mukilteo.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the first time I have read one of this author's books--it will not be the last. 9 December 2015

I really did not know what to expect when I first was made aware of this book. I do like private eye type books so I thought, what the heck. I downloaded it--started to read it and could not stop!! The language may be a bit off putting for some of you as well as some of the descriptions. I had no problem with it at all! This is slap stick at it's funniest, and admittedly can get a bit raunchy, as Jeff Reynolds meets and enlists the aid of prostitutes and other unsavory characters at the local watering holes in Walla Walla, Wa. All the characters are well developed and you feel like you really know all of them. This is the first time I have read one of this author's books--it will not be the last.

I found HEADLOCK to be a very amusing and interesting mystery that kept me intrigued to the very end. The author writes such colorful characters in detail that it is very easy to visualize each one.Jeff Reynolds the funny private detective/author interacts with a variety of people as he tries to solve a murder. His escapades will of course be covered in his latest book. Burl Barer has more Jeff Reynolds tales in store for us. You are in for a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Burl Barer Does It Again! A Must Read! 23 December 2015
By ReviewingCorner - Published on Amazon.com

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. True Crime is one of my favorite genres and Burl Barer is one of my favorite authors so I jumped at the chance to read it and am glad I did. Although it took a few chapters to really get me hooked, once I was I couldn't put the book down. If you are a fan of Suspense/Mystery you will love this book.
