Book 1: On a wild December night, I found myself on the Walnut Street Bridge. Moments later I was staring down into the terrified eyes of a young woman—just seconds before she slipped through my fingers and fell to her death. Who was she? Why did she kill herself? The look on that girl’s face will haunt me for the rest of my days. I had to find the answers…
Book 2: Two for the Money. I was home alone when I received a late-night phone call from a friend I hadn’t seen in years. He needed help, urgently. So I dropped everything. I was there in less than thirty minutes, but I was too late. I found Tom Sattler lying on his living room floor in a pool of blood, a revolver only inches away from his hand. It looked like suicide. But was it? I had to find the answer. If I didn’t…
Book 3: Hill House. For more than ten years the corpse of a young woman lay beneath the floorboards of Hill House, until the day two petty criminals entered the derelict property to steal the floorboards. They sure as hell found more than they bargained for… But who was she? Who put her there? Why did she have to die? Once again, I had to find the answers. I had to bring the kid some peace. Little did I know that in trying to unlock the secrets of Hill House, I was doomed to become its next victim.

Not for me - I found them a bit boring for a detective series, and not particularly challenging - no sitting on the edge of myseat, turning the pages with anticipation.

'Two For The Money' moved to the top of my book list because I loved ‘Harry Starke’, book one of this series, and was eager to see where Blair Howard would take his Private Investigator next. The answer is into the world of high end investment and murder. $350m has been stolen and a partner in the investment firm has committed suicide. Or has he? Harry Starke knew the man years ago and feels compelled to investigate. The author weaves a twisting tale that takes in many diverse characters all with reason and motive before Harry does what he does best and comes up with a plan to get answers. I won’t give away the ending but I didn't guess where it was going at all. A great book with a character that has quickly become a firm personal favourite.
'Hill House' starts with Harry Starke being called on to help out with an old murder case when the remains of a long dead teenager are found hidden in the floor of the house of the title. This is a fairly dark story that tackles some tough issues. It’s not in any way gratuitous and leaves the details to the reader but it's there. It fires up our hero too, making this case much more personal as he battles to find the people responsible. I personally really enjoyed it as much as I did the first two books of the series. It’s well written and keeps up a steady pace with Starke working the clues to discover what happened all those years ago. Aside from Starke himself Blair Howard has created a good cast of supporting characters that all bring something to the story. Overall this is another good addition to the series.

Like Bond Starke regularly goes into the bad guys lair all alone and comes out the winner, even the bad guy has a number of gun toting minders. Like Bond all of the women are stunning and waste no time in luring Starke into bed. Also like Bond the plots are entertaining but not that believable, especially when set in a relatively small city.
Another oddity is the obsessive detail of what each character is wearing, right down to the label and specific model. Who the hell ever says " I put on my Fjallraven blal, blah blah jacket in black etc"? Surely everybody just puts on their coat?
Considering the lifestyle depicted and the size of the firm it's also odd that Starke spends all of his time working for the police on a pro bono basis (or that the police allow him to be so intimately involved in their investigations).
Entertaining, but more fantasy fiction than thriller.

I don't care much for comparisons between lead characters, except for the fact that Amazon uses it for recommendations.
I enjoyed reading all three books and will indulge in reading the rest of the series.
Especially as the latest Jack Reacher has again come out in Hardback at a staggering £20.
