Please don’t let this book be a test of your speed of reading, read it slowly - over time. I re-read some chapters and each time a new message came up for me!
No, not a message but a ‘life lesson’ as the author calls it..
Dr Yusuf Merchant says happiness is a ‘process’ and cannot be ‘conditional’. He talks of ‘values’ like faith, gratitude, commitment, punctuality, forgiveness, love, compassion and many more with real life examples which emphasize how the journey of life is a learning process because as he says ‘values change’ as we grow...
Definitely not preachy, the book is largely autobiographical and partly real life anecdotes of situations and lives through which ‘doc’ seems to have grown on his journey, motivating us to grow on ours, towards a state of absolute ‘happyness’
As we face life difficulties, doc suggest, having faith in ourselves is not enough. We try to solve problems as best we can (usually employing the same method), but we kept failing. Most of the time, we don't have all the answers and it is ok .
he is a medical practitioner who has been working with people who have mental health issues like substance abuse , depression and anxiety for over 35years but his own life experience has actually made him write the book . Balance is the key - our spiritual , mental , social & physical plane should be balanced .. every chapter is short n crisp n I really did enjoy reading it .. the paradoxical pre-intention funda , chapter 7 is one my favourite funda.. “things that will never be understood” folder .. many more lil things that i could actually apply in my life n it has worked like magic .. Anyone who believes in “Being happy” should read it ..

God has His own ways to bring you solace when your life seems to be an unending ordeal. This time, my serendipitously ordering this book was a reinforcement of my belief.
The back cover of the book had the following questions that fanned my curiosity to devour the book as fast as I could (read):
- Do you want to help someone who’s depressed?
- Is there a key to unlocking happiness?
- Do you sometimes feel used or taken for granted in your relationships?
- How do you deal with anger, jealousy, resentment or sadness?
- Can anyone change the destined course of their life?
- What is the one proven antidote to addictive habits?
- What is the meaning of life?
- Is it possible to experience the fifth dimension?
Dr. Merchant, or Doc as he’s widely called, has been schooled by adversity from his childhood. He has lost friends and loved ones to dark addictions, endured heart wrenching betrayal, lived on the streets, and struggled with the trauma of abandonment and the absence of hope.
But he hit back against every crisis - and so can you.
In this book, the master of mindfulness offers forty-two different ways to live a peaceful and fulfilling life. Bringing together scientific theories on the functioning of the brain and how it alters under stress, depression and addiction, as well as existential questions on karma and meaning of life, he concludes that it is self-belief along with integrity of character that offers a shortcut to happiness.
There are two simple rules in neuroscience that govern the plasticity (changeability) of our brains:
Rule 1: The nerve cells that fire together, wire together.
Rule 2: The nerve cells that do not fire together, do not wire together.
There’s a deeper meaning to Rule number 2, which, implies that we can change anything about ourselves, including learnt behaviours. When we persist in indulging in negative self-talk, our brain opens up a repertoire of similar emotions experienced in the past. It is these old connections that make us feel lousy and depressed. We can force ourselves to do engage in positive self-affirmations and stop doing the negative self-talk. Also take note that the words we use to describe our feelings govern the feelings we experience.
If you want to lead a more successful and spiritual life, or if you want to take control of your destiny, the answers in this book can quench your thirst.
It’s the student who decides not only who the teacher is, but also the teachings that he or she will imbibe. Be a universal student. Let the universe open up its classroom. Learn.

This is not a self-help book (as Carlin said, if you have the motivation to wander down the self-help aisle, then you dont need it). Rather, it is a book for everyone. Or anyone who has ever wondered why life has not quite turned out the way you wanted it to be
