The letters are smooth painted wood, better quality than what the price would indicate, compared to other more expensive wood toys I've purchased. No rough or splintery edges in the puzzle either. Very impressed.
The one big downside for me was that some letter have to be put back in perfectly or they won't fit. I'm looking at you X! This can be really frustrating for a toddler who is just learning their letters and is sure they have it in the right place but can't figure out what they are doing wrong, it takes a very subtle flip to get these letters to go in. Not a deal breaker, but annoying.
I'd still buy it again, unless I could find the same puzzle without this problem.
I both like and dislike how the letters are shaped - so that they will only fit in their spots in one way. I don't like it because she gets frustrated and cranky (which I never like) but I really appreciate it because it will force her to learn how to do it properly. It makes us work on commands like "keep spinning it" or "flip it over" or "turn it around" or I lay the letters out correctly and then have her try to put them in.
We've had this puzzle for a couple of weeks now and she likes doing it. Very happy with the purchase, even though I really debated because of the price.
