In short, more of guitar history and personal memoir than an instruction manual. But it is described as a "how to book" on the cover.
1 Star Review
3rd edition and STILL no decent index!
Telecasters are arguably THE most common electric guitar based on longevity yet DE doesn't concentrate on them hardly at all! I was setting one up last night and had a question and gave up and went to the internet to find solution.
Don't bother using this to intonate your guitar as DE gives a commercial for Buzz Feiten system and guess what? You can't learn that from this or any book! DE does not explain how to do this.
5 Star Review
No one has more bench experience with a wider variety of guitars than DE! Others may be better at specifics (Frank Ford for acoustics comes to mind) but DE gives a knowledgeable walk through the world of guitar repair.
Many topics are covered in depth (others not see 3 star!)
The anecdotal stuff is gold! Love the discussion with Albert Collins!
It's your first place to start and you on't get into trouble if you follow this book. DE doesn't present advanced techniques per se and provides direction and confidence to work through the scary world of repairing your guitar!
3 Star Review!
Clean it up! Make it organized so if I want to intonate my Telecaster I can find the reference in the index under Telecaster: Intonation. Yea you may have to hire an editor to figure all out and print another page or two but the book would be much more useful!
Treat it like a repair manual! As mucha s I like the anecdotal stories with the pros put them together in the back or better yet publish another book of DE's adventures! (Did you know DE made a custom guitar for Jerry Garcia in the 70's! Tell us more!)
DE seems like a great guy on all accounts and put the blame firmly at the feet of the publisher and editors. it's all here and needs to be presented better.
