I tried this book because I wanted to know why Premchand is so celebrated. There were moments which made me cry, made me laugh, and put me in thinking for hours. Never have I ever before experienced the pain, the growth, the sacrifice, the penance of other people so deeply. This book gives me hope, spirit to fight each problem. It is a gem and will be forever imprinted on me.

Godan presents great insight into human nature

This is my second book by Munshi Premchand, and second book in Hindi literature I have ever read. My Hindi is not strong, and his Hindi is not very academic, it is quite difficult. The print is also not great. Still, I am unable to put the book down. It shows the lives and thinking of the very poor peasants and the very rich landlords. I would encourage people to read it even if their reading of Hindi language is not strong.

Pretty average or slightly above average

I can see why Hindi speaking population might like this because this seems to be the first thing that happened in that language that had a decent literary substance, but there are better novels in other languages. It can be of the level of any other Kannada speaking professor's aspirational literary work, pretty average.

The book is perfect description of rural life in India. It was written more than 80 years ago, but still many aspects of this life hold true. The characters have been described in such a great detail that you can feel what the character is feeling

If you want to understand how the poor(most of India in Earlier 20th century) lived, this is the book. It narrates beautifully how simple a poor man's desires are.
