Bok, a guitar player with a Shillong band, has a lot on his mind. His elder brother Kitdor has lost 50 lakh rupees on a trip to Nagaland to purchase arms for a group of militants. Kitdor is given a week to repay the money and the only person he can turn to is his laid-back younger brother. Bok is helpless until a chance encounter with a beautiful woman provides him with a desperate solution. But fate can't be cheated and soon the hapless musician is tangled in her web of lies. He must outmanoeuvre her and the trail of politicians, militants and cops she leaves in her wake, and find the 50 lakhs in time if he is to save his brother. Dark, atmospheric and utterly gripping, The Girl from Nongrim Hills is a superb thriller and a great Shillong novel.

The Girl From Nongrim Hills - Ankush Saikia... Thriller set in North East Indian hill station Shillong, a guitarist Bok leading a peaceful life in the erstwhile British colonial paradise, gets into a tangle when he goes all out to help his blackmailed brother Kitodar. The power politics and money laundering involving the beautiful girl is a well spun yarn around the plot. No loose ends and the author has gone into the finest details to nip the essence of life in the British colonial hill station. The way of life and the changes, modernisation had brought about to any hill station in India has been explicitly described. Reminisced quite a lot on the lifestyle on a hill station (Being from a hill station).. eply the naughty boy shoes, the Polo (Naming of centers by Britishers). The only negative aspect of the book is that - In some places when the storyline is moving fast on suspense a description of places made it move a bit slow.... YET IT WAS ONE OF MY FAST READS... 12 hours.... WONDERFUL BOOK.

Its a contemporary Shillong story.Beautiful Thriller. The story weaved nicely and the protagonist does their own duty. The lovely part of this novel is the love of the younger brother, he sacrificed his life to release his elder brother from the shackles of militant who threatened him with dire consequence if he failed to repay the Rs.50 Lakhs robbed in a hotel in Nagaland.
It beautifully narrated the localities in Shillong which many people forgot/don't know the local indigenous name fo the localities in Shillong, for example he narrated how the protagonist passed their activities to the Lumpyngngad locality through Motinagar (Lumdiengsoh)locality which many confused or don't know the existence/location of Lumpyngngad locality in Shillong.
Overall the story is worth reading. Bok did his duty to save his elder brother,Kitdor. However, Kirdor was ultimately shot and died which shattered Bok's dream.

The book has an instantaneous with someone familiar to Shillong. Having spent two decades in Shillong and been away for another two decades this book , brings out memories associated with each and every nook of the wonderful town.
Simplicity yet gripping has been the hallmark of the writer. A typical single session read that transforms you to a distant wonderland. I shared this book with my nephew who has never been to Shillong and he too found it engrossing.
Guess with this book and also with 'Urban Jungle' by Samrat Choudhry, I think a new genre of writers are in the horizon who can think out of the box and present the story in a lucid manner.

A gripping tale of two brothers trapped in an arms deal gone horribly wrong. Terrific atmosphere throughout and Shillong as the backdrop is absolutely fascinating. The continuous rains and pine-laced mountains act as the perfect metaphors for the unpredictability of situations in Bok's (the protagonist) world. What keeps the reader glued is the narrative which moves with a compelling raciness. An enjoyable read!

Nicely plotted but yes people from Shillong can enjoy it more, as per the surroundings and some dishes and incidents and the way of shillong people talk in Hindi. Overall it's worth reading full of thrills.
