Sudeep Sen's language is tactile and visual, and Fractals abounds with the vivid images he evokes of the places he has visited and the people he has met. Sketches in words calibrate the dimensions of the paintings of Matisse and Picasso. Paeans to sculptors (Anish Kapoor) and to many of India's gifted classical dancers map differing aesthetic journeys. Sen achieves an altogether new synesthetics while he recreates paintings or follows rhythmically the movement of different classical dancers....
His poems are often narratives awash with color, while others enunciate powerful emotions. Some of the poems remain uncomplicated and conversational, while others serve as impressionistic word paintings and capture multiple nuances and mixed moods. The last section of the book is comprised of translations from the work of significant poets and traditions, Indian and otherwise. This is a welcome inclusion, because we are allowed to look at the work that has possibly influenced, inspired and shaped Sen's poetic sensibility.... This anthology should occupy an accessible spot on many a bookshelf, since it needs to be taken down often enough and savored, in delectable little bites and nibbles.
