I was given an e-copy in exchange for my honest review.
The story revolves around a family moving into a new home and town. Terry has her hands full getting the home together, raising her 5 year old son Tyler, and trying to make he husband David happy. David has been busy trying to make his mark at his new job. He works late nights and is not much help to Terry when it comes to raising Tyler. David goes to work, comes home, plops on the couch, and complains about whatever he can that Terry didn't do correctly, or so that is what Terry thinks that is all he does. Little does she know, even though they have only lived there a short time, David has made a new friend that he spends lots of time with during and after work.
After laying Tyler down for his nap one day, Terry hears him talking to someone. When she asks him later who he was talking with, he said The Folks. After chatting with him about it, Terry has come to find out that Tyler has not one, but several imaginary friends. Terry becomes concerned and talks with her aunt and therapist about it. They both have told her that it is normal and that it is Ty's way of coping with everything.
After being in the new home for a few months, strange things begin to happen. Terry hears noises and has bizarre dreams. Tyler talks more about The Folks, but warns Terry not to mention them to anyone else. Accidents, including deaths, start happening at the drop of a hat. Tyler knows more about things than he should. Things just aren't adding up and seem to start having some sort of pattern, but it just doesn't make sense.
After talking herself out of it several times, Terry finally decides to go with her gut and do some digging. Turns out that she knew the answers all along, but they are just too bizarre for anyone to believe.
Not only are things falling apart around her, but she soon finds out that her world is about to crash down around her and she may be too late to stop it. She has found out more answers than she can handle. Will she find all the answers she needs to solve the issues before it is too late? And will she ever find her happily ever after or will she continue to live in this nightmare that she can't wake up from?
This book is full of twist and turns. I felt a real connection with Terry. We have a lot in common. A lot of the issues she has, she wants to break away from, but there is always something stopping her. When she starts to think she has both feet planted firmly on the ground, someone or something comes along and knocks her over. One minute you are feeling bad for her, the next you just want to shake her and make her see what is right in front of her. Each character is well thought up and plays their part well.
I could go on and on about this book and what happens, but I don't want to give all the good stuff away. You will just have to read it to find out what happens.
From my understanding, this is the authors first book, but you couldn't tell it. She has a great imagination that keeps you wanting more. There were a few minor editing issues, but nothing that caused and issue with the storyline of the flow of the book. Great story. Love the paranormal/horror context of it along with a mothers survival to protect her child no matter the risks. Can't wait to see what the next installment holds. I look forward to reading more by this author. I have read other woke by her, and with each book she continues to grow as a great writer that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Recommended for a mature audience due to some adult situations.
I can't say that one genre sums it up. It contains horror, paranormal, mystery, and a little romance.
