In my case, I have lost count of the number of "Far Pavilions" I have bought over the years - they keep getting "borrowed", and I have a feeling that this won't be the last one I buy - but I just love keeping one on my bookshelf for yet another nostalgic peek from time to time.
the characters are nicely sketched and the story line is a mix of romance, palace intrigue and imperial ambition. be warned that some readers may find the detailed allusion to daily life of the characters excessive but it adds on the charm of the book.
but it if you admire books like Bhowani Junction.
