Edgar Allan Poe, the famous American poet and short story writer, was born in 1809 and was an orphan by the age of three. He attended a private school in England and later studied at the University of Virginia. After abandoning a military career, Poe published several volumes of poetry and shot stories. Poe died at the age of forty, only two years after the death of his young wife.
