Victor Isakov is a Microsoft Certified Master, Microsoft Certified Architect, and Microsoft Certified Trainer. He's worked with SQL Server since 1994 and is a Microsoft SQL Server MVP. Victor is the author of MCITP Developer: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Database Solutions Design (Exam 70-441) Study Guide (Sybex, 2006) and co-author of MCITP Administrator: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Optimization and Maintenance (Exam 70-444) Study Guide (Sybex, 2007). He also co-authored the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Companion (Microsoft Press, 2006) and helped to create the High Availability course for Microsoft's official curriculum. Currently Victor is based in Sydney, Australia, and provides consulting and training services to organizations worldwide.

The book covers a lot of ground. The book does include links to Microsoft's documentation library more than a few times to help the reader further understand a topic. But, the book could have included small blurbs from the site directly in to the book to help the reader's flow going, rather than have us go between the book and the site for a lot of the topics discussed.

There are too many typos when it comes to the included t-sql code examples. No one with T-SQL knowledge proof read the code. Commas (,) are replaced by single quotes (') A LOT. This is not what I would expect of a first-party book from Microsoft.

I am a senior SQL server DBA with over 20 years experience in the technical field in a variety of disciplines and passed 70-764 using this guide as the primary study guide. Microsoft Exams expect you to use their tools for solutions where in the real world we very rarely use things like Activity Monitor or sp_who2 because there are much better third party tools out there. This book does a good job mostly prepping a senior DBA to pass the exam, it will NOT prepare someone who is NOT a DBA or who has NO experience with SQL server to pass the exam but that's not the book's purpose. If you don't have a lot of experience with SQL Server invest in other SQL books and learning about and using the software before you attempt 70-764. I did get quite a few questions that were not covered by this book but it is a good general study guide.

I am currently studying for the 70-764 exam and the code "examples" are terrible. Way to many typos for this to be a functional demo. Plus on most exam refs they give you a CD or a source where you can get all the code examples typed out so you can run them to see the results. This book does not include it and requires you to type out every block. It quickly becomes very tedious and boring.

The bad:
Microsoft Press should be ashamed to release a book with so many spelling and grammatical errors. It seems like the book was barely edited if at all.

The author often refers the reader to the Microsoft web site for additional info. While I realize he can't include everything from the Microsoft documentation in the book, I felt some topics could have had at least a paragraph summarizing the subject instead of just telling you to look it up on your own. I bought the book expecting the majority of the info to be in the book.

The good:
The overall content of the book is pretty good. The author takes the time to point out the version of SQL Server a feature was released in, which I appreciate.

The author includes a quiz at the end of each chapter.

The section on availability groups was detailed and helped me prepare for the exam.
