Blurb of the book-
In Every Rock has a Rose Lining, author Monalisa provides a unique perspective using a vivid narrative that keeps the reader mesmerized by the flow of events and characterization. Describing the ground realities faced by an Indian couple when they moved from India to the United States as new immigrants, this book is a first hand account of life as a foreign students in the U.S., along with its myriad perks and challenges.
Relating a true story of success while balancing life on a shoestring budget, this is also a book of small hopes, small pleasures, small battles, and small victories, and how all these small things together formed a memorable journey that was larger than life.
The cover of this novel is really impressive, the blurb of novel is also captivating.
This book is real helpful for all students who want to go to US for their higher studies.
Author monalisa mohanty writing is captivating in all senses. She defined everythings are very clear. She used general english for reader. She described all incident briefly and yes... Many students face lots of problems at the time of thier higher studies, this book is inspirational for GRE students. Author wrote about indian students life, how they survive beyond our country tradition.
a time where every person in India aspiring to be a US citizen, it is very hard to focus on the hardships that one has to go through to be in that place. Every Rock has a Rose Lining by Monalisa is a perfect portrayal of how one has to wade in the troubled waters to get to a place that feels like home. Unlike what we have been seeing everywhere in movies and television about how glittering the life in the west is, this book brings the real face of the struggle. However, it also emphasises a great deal on how to endure through those times The challenges of settling in, in a country that works on a different time zone altogether brings problems of facing jet lag to understanding how to spend money in dollars. Whilst, the many challenges before going to America is being able to crack the GRE exam and listen to a man speaking fluent american accent bereft of your understanding is a thing of its own. The author very nicely brings dainty details into the bigger picture which are often not surfaced anywhere. The problems that the characters face in this book are many, right from getting into an institution to the financial problems. Although the story felt slightly prolonged, the emotions of the chapters were being carried well. In the end, this story clearly propagates the essence of hardwork and patience culminated to say that every rock has a rose lining. If I describe all things here in the words that will be not possible because author pen downed in wonderfully way.
Story plot: 5/5
Total rating : 4.5/5
It is an account of the first few years spent by the author and her husband at the United States after they were wedlocked by their families.
Gyaan, a studious and career oriented third year engineering student then wishes to take the risk of further studies in M.S in USA. Since he makes sure everything goes well on his part, he seems to be very responsible in nature. His risk taking decisions for a happy future in the long run shows his far sightedness.
Gyaan and the author are in love and only after the acceptance of their parents they decide to marry each other before Gyaan leaves for America.
The author on the other hand enjoys each and every moment of her life with small trips from exams to the biggest trip of her life to meet their country of dreams- America.
The couple is filled with self respect and zeal to solve their problems on their own. While one reads the book, one can easily notice this fact.
The novel has secondary characters including Manas, Sanjoy, Laura, Troy and many more.
The quest of love to hardships of Indians in foreign countries to the solutions formulated together, 'Every Rock Has A Rose Lining' is a perfect one time read to understand human relationships and the beauty of a thing called heart.
The language is beautiful with the fact that while reading you try to inherit the American accent of each word. It is narrative and one is spellvound by the characters' way to live through each event.
As a plot, there are a few things missing in the book such as the links to previous incidents and their stating ways.
But as a life narrative account, this can be overlooked.
A few grammar mistakes and a cut at a page made me give the book 3 stars or else it deserved 4 stars making it a good one time read.
I personally loved the book and would suggest the readers to read it once.
I would appreciate the author for letting me visit foreign universities through her words for I would too in a few years choose the same career risk as Gyaana did.
