While there are pockets of excellence all over the country, the tragedy is that we don't get to hear about these.
For example, even though I am a doctor and an active angel investor in the healthcare space, it was only when I went to Stanford that I heard about the pioneering work done by Professor B Ravi, who founded BETIC, the Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation Centre in IIT Bombay - which is in the city where I live!
His team has been doing groundbreaking work on creating innovative medical devices in India for Indians, I was very pleased to read his book, The Essence of Medical Device Innovation, the Kindle edition of which is available free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers. This is a lucid and clearly written book, on how doctors and engineers can innovate in order to create healthcare technology which is appropriate for Indian conditions. He has defined a simple practical 4 step model - from the bed; to the laboratory; and then to the market, so that it goes back to the bedside, where the doctor can use it for treating his patients. He walks readers through his framework with many real life examples of all the innovations which the BETIC team has created. It's a simple 4 D process: Define the unmet clinical need;
Develop a novel device ;
Deliver it by testing a working prototype ; and finally,
Deploy it in the market, by commercializing it, so that doctors start using it.
My only criticism is that Dr Ravi is so humble, that I had to go to Stanford to find out about his work!
I hope he actively markets the book, which is a steal at Rs 295 only, so that its message reaches out to the thousands of engineers and doctors who want to improve health care in India, by developing innovative medical devices.
