Review of the Book ‘Entrepreneurship Simplified’ by Ashok Soota and SR Gopalan.
Ashok and Gopalan explained their reason for writing this book is to share their decades of experience into a concise, comprehensive and practical guide for all entrepreneurs.
As a person whose career ran parallel to the Indian Information Technology (IT) industry for nearly forty five years, the ideas presented in the book resonate well with me.
I read many books on entrepreneurship and management by eminent authors who are either professors from academia or successful media persons. Such books present the theme very nicely as a story with too much of overheads running into several hundreds pages and you get tired by the time you complete reading the book. Ashok and Gopalan, a combination of an engineer and a finance person, makes their point more directly and straight forward in a fraction of the pages. There is very little jargon and puff. It is all matter and no gas!
These ideas were articulated in a simple yet powerful manner that can set a lot of triggers in your mind. Examples given are real, current and drawn from actual experience. I specifically find two chapters are of very high value – Winning with VCs and Business Strategy (specifically pivoting strategy).
In my early career as young electronic design engineer I used to refer to ‘Electronic Design Reference Handbook’ that provided me with useful tips and similar examples to aid in the design. This book may be seen as ‘Entrepreneurship Reference Handbook’.
I was impressed with the humility of the authors who have admitted some mistakes they made and shared them as lessons for others to avoid.
Associations like TiE and Nasscom offer mentoring programs for young entrepreneurs by experienced senior members. The mentees will be doing a favour to themselves if they read ‘Entrepreneurship Simplified’ and then meet mentors with right questions.
I should admit that Ashok and Gopalan have succeeded in meeting their objective in writing the book.
I strongly recommend ‘Entrepreneurship Simplified’ for all entrepreneurs who are in the process of setting up their ventures, those who are managing small-medium enterprises and the senior manager of business units of large enterprises who are increasingly becoming intrepreneurs. I am sure that it can open up many new avenues for building new businesses.
It will be appropriate to discuss first about his corporate profile, awards and his achievements. Mr. Ashok Soota is a profound authority in the IT field and who has over four decades of experience. He is a serial entrepreneur and who has found multiple firms relatively larger ones, and had led them to successful IPO.
Of late, he has been conferred the most prestigious life time achievement awards "Express IT Awards", for his contributions to Indian IT industry.
Happiest Minds Technologies
His latest sojourn is Happiest Minds Technologies and he established it after he resigned from MindTree. The firm primarily focuses on disruptive technologies such as big data, analytics, mobility, cloud, internet of things, security, unified communications, digital transformation and etc.
Happiest Minds is headquartered in Bangalore and has multiple offices in India, US, UK, Canada, Singapore, Australia and the Middle East. It is ever expanding to newer geographies, with a further plan to enter into continental Europe, and aims to expand even more rapidly through M&A.
Needless to mention, Happiest Minds is among one of the fastest growing IT companies in multiple areas and is on an exponential growth trajectory. It is expected to touch a US$ 100 million annual run rate. Again like earlier firms, Mr. Soota plans to make Happiest Minds too a public limited company.
Entrepreneurship Simplified from Idea to IPO
Mr. Ashok Soota has written a book "Entrepreneurship Simplified from Idea to IPO”. He has co-authored it with a close colleague Mr. S. R. Gopalan, and the duo has tried to distil their decades of rich experience in the book.
Entrepreneurship Simplified touches all the intricate tips, tricks, troubles and tribulations of doing a business. It talks about the idea generation, validation, funding, how to win VCs, how to build an organization, strategy, marketing, wealth creation and much more.
It is though mainly focused towards first-timers but again topics like branding, building an organisation and ESOP are something which might add value and provide insight to even the most seasoned professionals.
I feel there was a need of a handbook on the topic and it seems to have arrived at an appropriate time. The book is away from all the cacophony and unrealistic advice sometimes one needs to heed, in particular; if you are a new entrant.
It has so aptly been summarized by Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, "From start-up to scale-up, Soota and Gopalan simplify the entrepreneurial challenge".
In short, it seems Mr. Ashok Soota is in the best period of his career and who is regular with the awards too while his pursuit for excellence continues unabated.
