How it is possible to attain all this with just some life style changes is Logically explained in this book.
This book is a saga of research that commenced in 2012 by Dr. Dixit, inspired by the fitness campaign by late Dr. Shrikant Jichkar. The researches which were all published in the peer reviewed prestigious “International journal of clinical trials” has been the foundation for this book which is meant for both lay and learned. The book is written in simple English with most of the chapters have tabulated results of trials, which are easy to interpret and on which modern medicine relies the most.
It is important to note that Dr. Dixit commenced his trials by making himself a subject for the same which is a depiction of the sincerity towards his commitment to manage diabetes and bringing out people from being drug dependent. In the very first chapter of the book he shows how following his diet plan 1200 individuals which includes 150 doctors have effectively managed their weight and diabetes!!
A full chapter has been devoted to obesity which delves into its possible causes and the ways to measure obesity. While the chapter on “Diet” reveals the nature of ingredients in our food ranging from carbohydrates, fat, protein, even water and of-course the glycemic index. Food items high in glycemic index has been discouraged for diabetes patients like cooked potato and sweets have been clubbed in the same bracket.
A chapter has been fully devoted for exercise. The chapter begins with an interesting question- “Have you ever seen any animal other than man doing exercise?” This question gets answered, that why exercise an “un-natural activity” needs to be done regularly. Exercises have been categorized viz. Strength, Heart and Lungs and Elasticity. The author has stressed on the importance of each but has concluded that walking 35 KM a week is the best. While going through this book the reader gets an impression that it has seriously questioned the relevance of the fitness industry or the expensive herbs for weight-loss those are available in medical stores or traded on-line at a hefty price.
The sixth chapter of the book – “Magician inside the body insulin and other hormones” is the cornerstone for the concept of eating just two times a day. Though it is accepted that “Insulin is secreted 24 hours in the body”, which accounts for half the insulin secreted by the body and individual has no control over it, but the rest half is the result of the food we take, especially food high in carbohydrates. It has been explained so lucidly that one of the “important function of insulin is to convert the high amount of glucose in the blood, after meals, to glycogen in the liver. When we do not eat food, between the two meals, the glucose level, in the blood drops down. As a response to this, insulin level in the blood also declines”.
Citing from a workshop by American Society of Nutrition, Dr. Dixit demonstrates that eating between the meals disturbs the energy balance of the body and results in weight gain. So in clear terms and resolve he had mentioned that breakfast in addition to two meals has no relevance. The book has documented 46 most popularly asked questions which can serve as a quick reference. Various illustrations with subtle humor makes the book indeed more reader friendly.
Though we may have minor points of disagreement and some more expectations like more discussion on dealing with hypoglycemic condition while following the regime, but those are not the moot issue, in the end what matters are the amazing success story of numerous individuals by following the plan recommended in the book.
This book which is readily available on www.amazon.in, is a must read for all the members of the EWL group, while it is important to follow and get success, it is more important to understand the why behind it. Finally, Ivan Illich the famous Austrian Philosopher once commented about a book that this book enables a lay to use expert advise rather than being used by experts. I hold the same comments for “The Effortless Weight Loss and Diabetes Prevention”.
