I would recommend that not only HR people (L&D teams in particular) but also ‘forward-thinking’ and ‘open-minded’ Leaders and their Managers read this book and to begin applying this gradually. I’m aware that change of such a magnitude may not be easy to implement right away, but envisioning the incremental benefits, a gradual change is better than no change at all.
The ELEMENTS of Motivation 3.0 / Intrinsic Motivation / Type I behavior are:
1. Autonomy – (by employees over: Task, Time, Technique & Team)
2. Mastery – (the desire to get better and better at something that *matters*)
3. Purpose – (desire to do meaningful work to achieve a ‘higher’ cause / objective)
It’s high time that the ‘Carrots and Stick method’ be substituted with a more effective way of motivating people.
It is a good read, but if you are trying to find self actualization motivation from it then it is better to look elsewhere.
