My respect for Sam Pitroda has already multiplied manifold...
Even after making it big in USA, Sam’s love for India and his keen desire to contribute to his motherland India’s development brings out a true sense of his patriotism. Sam speaks as to how he overcomes obstinate Indian bureaucracy and red tape to usher telecom revolution in India. Sam wore many hats during his stay in India heading many key committees that were to shape the future economic policies of India. Sam also talks about his share of disappointment when faced with false charges of corruption as victim of political rivalry / vendetta.
Sam narrates his struggle with ill health and his fight back after being almost financially bankrupt only shows his determination, conviction and belief in India. This book is truly an inspiration to all Indians who migrate but never thought about giving back to their country.
Sam is truly an inspiration to all Indians who still loves his India even though it fails to give him much deserved recognition. Sam story is of a Karma Yogi who strived to make all the difference to his country without any desire for rewards. A must read for all aspiring young Indians with never a dull moment. A fascinating book and that tells the story of man to achieve so much against all odds.
his innovations are noteworthy. he worked for the government for 1 rupee a year salary which many people would not believer know.
he is a modern Gandhi of 21st century to have served the nation for poverty alleviation and democratisation of government processes.every young man should read this book. Inspite of all adversities he took challenges to set a process of modernising india with rajiv providing the full support.
he is solely responsible to connect a billion people of our nation. i salute him.
All the doors of bureaucracy immediately opens for him & the heir-apparent, Rajiv Gandhi, who was present at the meeting with PM becomes his life-long friend & champion..He is soon able to cut through all opposition to set up the now-legendary C-DOT which developed the rural exchanges suited to Indian conditions & led to the widespread connectivity in rural areas through the ubiquitious PCOs & STD booths . Many, including Pitroda, believe these to be the precursors to today's mobile telephony revolution in India.
His credibility established, he is then able to follow up with similar Missions on Health, Literacy, Education etc which assembled the best minds on the subjects, identified priorities & achieved remarkable progress in many areas.Mass immunisation of children through polio vaccine & setting up manufacturing capacity for fibre optic cables are a few of the success stories he lists.
One of Pitroda's great strengths is that he has always been a "big picture" man. Gandhiji was his childhood idol & he always looks at each technological area as a platform to help India's helpless poor. Another impressive quality of his that comes through is his willingness to look for long-term results rather than quick-fix solutions. He readily concedes that some of the work his team did for the Knowledge Commission during Manmohan Singh's tenure was just planting the seeds whose fruits may be available only 10-20 years down the road. It is clear that he brought value to his assignments in the Govt, for he continued to serve in his positions even after Rajive's assassination with the V.P.Singh govt. He used to draw only a one Rupee salary & he had relinquished his US citizenship to avoid complications when serving GoI. He left finally only after the installation of Modi govt, when his health had deteriorated (two heart surgeries & a bout with cancer ).
The book is eminently readable & it is typical of Pitroda's collaborative nature that he has enlisted the help of a professional writer ,Dr.Chanoff, for writing it.I liked especially the final chapter 'At the Crossroads', which is an eloquent testimony of the man's incisive ,analytical mind & clear-eyed vision about India's place in a rapidly changing world.
