Product Description

Thousands of feet below the surface world and tucked behind a waterfall lies a ceaseless juggernaut of commerce, the six tiers of the city working together to provide anything desired. Some come to Solypse for trade; others simply come to disappear. Though the descent to the city is treacherous and long, it is lucrative for those willing to brave the trek. Those who stay are bolder still: for in a city full of those who wish to be forgotten, the real rules are often made in the shadows.
With promises of wealth come promises of power. As evil brews beneath the city, clandestine power struggles between politicians, magicians, merchants, and assassins bring the city of Solypse to the brink of annihilation. With a temple unable to help and a council unwilling to save its own people, it is up to an exiled dwarf, a reluctant assassin, and a failed priest to save the city.

About the Author

Paul Neslusan grew up enchanted with the way that books could transport him anywhere. He began the Solypse series to try to create a world as immersive as the ones he loved while he was growing up. His goal is to create an epic fantasy world that is both appealing and immersive for all readers ages 15 to 150. He lives in Central Massachusetts with his extremely patient wife and three children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy Adventure At Its Best! 6 January 2015
By Vision Quest - Published on Amazon.com

If you loved The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings you are sure to love "The Depths."

I was totally immersed in the book within the first few pages. Instead of creating a new world in the far reaches of space, author Paul Neslusan creates a hidden city thousands of feet below the earth's surface.

Solypse is a city of layers, physical layers, spiritual and political layers. It is populated by dwarfs, elves, humans, magicians and more. And what is even more fascinating is that this is a novel of layers. The history of how Solypse came into being is slowly revealed at the same time as the layers of each of the main characters are peeled off to reveal the heroes hidden beneath.

The plot is complex and fast moving as we move back and forth between a small band of travelers on a trade mission, to the impending danger to the City of Solypse. As the travelers fight for survival on "the path," their backgrounds unfold. Pash is the powerless pawn of a domineering, ruthless father. The Temple priests are sending him on a mission to see if he can "come into his own." Larrik, a dwarf with a hidden past, has been sent to protect Path -- and Cillian, who has been ordered to accompany them is a master assassin.

As Solypse comes under attack by an unspeakably evil forces, it is up to these three to gather the resources that will save the city from total annihilation.

I loved the plot and the action, but most of all I loved the character development and the forging of relationships between groups of people who would not ordinarily become friends.

"Book ONE" would imply that Book Two is in the works, I have my fingers crossed that I don't have to wait too long!

5.0 out of 5 stars but I am so glad that I made an exception for this book 14 December 2014

The fantasy genre is not something that I normally gravitate toward, but I am so glad that I made an exception for this book. The author constructed a completely unique and original setting for his story and then populated it with a great cast of expertly developed characters that the reader quickly becomes invested in. The story takes some completely unforeseen twists on the way to its wild conclusion and I genuinely enjoyed the journey. I am very glad to see that this book appears to be the first in a series. Can't wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story and even better characters. 24 December 2014

Most of the times I start to read a book, I want the story to grab me right away and not let me go. This book did that and also wrapped me up in the characters. I was reading and I wanted to know more about the characters right away, I can't wait to read the second installment. If you are a fan of fantasy books, give this first time author a chance and he'll wrap you up too. I have it on good authority that Paul is about halfway done with book two, so hurry up and get through it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read! 5 January 2015

I'm hesitant with new writers, but am so glad I took a bet on this book. From the surprising shift of the classic archetypes, to a clever darker feel, this is the type of fantasy fiction I love. The magic system is clear but unexpected, and the world created is unique and kept me guessing. Great debut and already anticipating the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good "read" 1 February 2015

The book is complex and requires effort on the part of the reader as he journeys through a strange world. Slowly but surely, however, I was drawn in to its dramatic and inexorable conclusion. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
