The keyboard is quite average it is not bad but it is not as good as the ones I have used on Lenovo laptops. Typing will take getting used to but I have quite become accustomed to this. The track pad is awesome, I sometimes think it is so accurate that I can play counter strike with its pointing precision (PS: Install the Synaptic driver or it wont deliver all its goodness).
i3 vs i5 --- There are Celeron, i3 and i5 models in the Vostro line-up. Now I have used the i3 model and quite frankly I do not see any difference between it and the i5 especially when I use windows 8 which is blazingly fast. I guess the difference will come into picture when you are doing intensive tasks like Photoshop with 50mp photo or something.
Gaming --- Can Intel deliver with graphics? unfortunately it cant. Now it depends on what are your needs. For me a good gaming PC is something that can run 2013 and onward games at decent graphic settings and this one cant. FIFA some reason runs on ultra without problems. If like me you are a fan of age of empires or civilization type games this is ok. PS : The keyboard will be an issue in gaming.
Heating -- If like me you are annoyed with the AMD processors and how much they heat up on even the minimal programmes the good news is that the processor in this PC is a ULV certified (ultra low voltage) processor so it does not heat up that much. Though it does so on heavy gaming. A note though, this PC does heat up more than my old HP - Celeron.
Speakers -- The speakers on this are very poor. Firstly they are very soft. Also the sound thy produce lacks character. I would compare the speakers to the ones you find on some of the mid range cell phones.
Overall -- I think that this is a good PC. Now I cant say that this is a one size fits for all type device. You should do digging around and see what is good for you. I recommend this.
What I like -- Screen is remarkable, quite zippy no lag (I think this one goes to windows 8), MacAfee 15 months subscription. Webcam is above average and its HD (PS don't think you can do Vlogs with this, you cant, It is not that good). USB 3.0 port. VGA port is there, (no HDMI though)
What I dislike -- Keyboard, Single port for mic and earphones, box design.
1. The plastic body looks cheap. A mild gentle one-finger-push on the Dell logo (on the top surface) reveals a fragile body.
Seems to be a design choice. The bottom surface is comparatively sturdy.
2. The key panel (the large panel which has slots for all the keys) seems not seated firmly.
Whenever I press the (left side) 'Ctrl' button, that region of the panel also goes down
and comes up when i release the button with a 'tick-tick' sound all the time.
3. 'Num lock' indicator not available
4. 'SysRq' button not available (This will be useful in Linux to recover from a hang. This machine is Ubuntu preloaded by the way.
I am using alternate means.)
5. The fan area heats up easily on doing memory/CPU intensive computations.
6. Brightness increase/decrease is inconvenient. Finer level adjustments are difficult to make.
7. Moving finger across the touch pad area gets misinterpreted for drag and drop. I don’t know if its my problem or driver issue. So I am using mouse.
8. Power on/off indicator is not available.
9. RAM upgrade: I wanted RAM upgrade to 8GB. As of 17-Mar-2015 I came to know from a Dell support specialist that 8GB RAM upgrade is not tested. (I wanted clarity but the support specialist advised me to check it by myself by replacing the existing
4GB RAM with a 8GB one in some service centre and then go for 8GB RAM, if detected). Dell released BIOS update on 15-Feb-2015 for
Windows/DOS. I am using Ubuntu. I am not sure how it is going to help Ubuntu users like me. I requested a quotation
from Dell on 15-Mar-2015 for 8GB RAM upgrade and still yet to get it. I bought this laptop hoping that I can upgrade RAM if required.
10. 180 degree opening of the display screen is not possible due to design. You can open the screen up to say, 130 to 135 degree approx.
11. The (free) DELL laptop bag I got is not properly stitched. I don't think it can exceed a life of 6 months on regular usage (6 days per week).
1. The system is quite responsive/faster for 4GB RAM, I expect 8GB RAM upgrade (if feasible) will be great for personal computing.
2. Cam is quite ok.
3. Speakers are not very loud but I am fine with the fitted one.
4. Matte finish is my personal preference, so I am good with that.
(Downside: Finger impressions would appear on the top surface if the fingers are little sweaty or oily while handling)
5. Battery lasts for 2.5 to 3 hours on heavy usage.
This is supposed to be a entry level business class machine and hence it can withstand a reasonable amount of wear and tear. The Dell build quality is good. Some might find it plasticky but at this price point this is a good buy. Don't expect this machine to drop and survive. Handle it with reasonable care and this should serve you fine.
The hard disk is user replaceable and so is the RAM. This makes this machine better than the equivalent Inspirons. The chicklet keyboard takes some getting used to especially if you are migrating from a classical keyboard. There is a separate number keyboard on the side which is a good to have. The touch pad is also different from the earlier models and takes some getting used to.
The i5 processor on this machine is fast and the heat on the base of the laptop is significantly lower than earlier models because of the low power processor. In the medium to long term this machine should therefore last longer. The 4 GB of DDR3 RAM that this machine comes with is good for most practical purposes.
Battery backup is decent and lasts about 4 hours when the device is new. Speakers are ok. Not great, just about ok.
There are also no LED indicators for hard disk activity, Wifi, Bluetooth, etc. The only indicator is for power and battery and that too is a single LED on the front right of the machine. Dell seems to be cutting corners in funny places. If you are used to some of these things, their absence on this device can be unnerving.
On the whole this is a good buy.
