Title: The Dalai Lama's Cat
Author:David Michie
Genre: Spiritual Fiction
Page count: 216
Rating: 4.5/5⭐
Meet the most cutest protagonist of all HHC(His Holiness's Cat). She has several names given by her closed ones but she is mostly known as HHC. She was rescued from the paths of Delhi & to her fortune she ends up with His Holiness Dalai Lama. Now, she gets to live in the most private quarters of the worlds most greatest spiritual leader his holiness in Jokhang in Namgyal Monestary of Dharamshala.
She gets to sleep near His Holiness, she gets to see who are the world celebrities visiting him, what are their private conversations, also sometimes face unwanted guests like a dog named kyi-kyi in her place, gets to meet a male cat of her dreams who lived in nearby residence area.
This beautiful cat with a princely attitude(ofcourse why not, she is destined to live with TDL(The Dalai Lama) narrates us some profound life lessons from the events happening around her. There are several other characters like the assistants of TDL named Tenzin & Chogyal, Lobsang the translator, Franc the owner of a cafe down the street, Mrs Trinci the cook etc. The book is divided in 12 chapters each of them conveying different life lessons from Buddhism perspective taught in the form of 12 different events(stories) which happen in the monestary narrated by a cat.
I found my whole experience of reading this book a unique one. Those who keep interest in Buddhism/spirituality & also who wants to read books which are fictional yet gives you some wisdom alongwith it can definitely go for it. The writing style & vocabulary is rich & advanced. So would not recommend it to the beginners

It is exactly that kind of novel you need to uplift your mood and life!
I just loved it. Looking forward to read the other books in the dalailama cat series.
Everything is seen through the cats eye and it really makes you think again. No one is talking down to you. Also there are so many things you know and believe in..it feels good to be reassured.
Now I have ordered for the next book..'The art of purring'. Hope i enjoy it as much as the first one.Waiting for HHC

"I know. But how?"
"Well, you know there's one subject that absolutely guarantees huge sales."
"What?"
"CATS! Put a cat in your next book!"
And so the concept of this dreadful book was (mis)conceived. It's part hagiography of the Dalai Lama, part Buddhist sermon, with endless exposition (he doesn't show; he tells) with a 'cat' narrator who has no catlike qualities at all - has, in fact, no discernible qualities whatsoever. It's badly written and full of howlers, such as Oxford and Cambridge being described as "England's two most Ivy League universities" (Ivy League?!?), and an Italian chef who cooks French food (in a Buddhist monastery, mind you) "wearing an emerald green dress with dangling gold earrings and matching bracelets that clanked together every time she moved her arms." And gold rings clustered on her fingers. Not only impractical for a chef, but highly unhygienic and downright dangerous.
I bought this book because I'm a mad cat lady, but this author clearly knows nothing at all about cats. It's perfectly possible to write a feline narrator who really is a cat - see 'The Travelling Cat Chronicles' by Hiro Arikawa - but that requires the skill and talent this author so obviously lacks.
There are many vegetarian sources of iron including leafy greens, beans, soya, dried fruit, potatoe skins, mushroom, seaweed and seeds. There are much more. There are also many foods fortified with B12 such as nut milk and cereals. I don't think doctors have a lot of training in nutrition, but I would have thought that Buddhists would have taken some time to study this. Maybe they are too lazy as one of the monks described being shy.
As for farming methods, yes they do have to done differenlty, but what is worse cow farms, chicken farms or corn farms?
This is a gentle tale written from the view point of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s cat. Each chapter introduces one of the key principles behind Buddhist teaching, but the messages are delivered almost subliminally by relating them as the experiences and observations of the growing kitten. A delightfully varied range of characters are introduced throughout the story, and from monks to celebrities seeking an audience with the Dalai Lama, each brings a different focus to the story.
The only reason I gave this a 4-Star rating was, that as the book progressed, I found the cat’s antics less interesting than the passages which related more directly to Buddhist philosophy. That said, it is a very easy-read, and perhaps one that would particularly suit anyone looking for a gentle introduction to mindfulness and Buddhist teaching.
