Crucial BX100 SSD
Outlast and outperform your hard drive.
Boot up almost instantly. Load programs in seconds. And accelerate demanding applications with ease. It all starts with ditching your hard drive.
The storage revolution that started in 2008 with our first SSD continues with the new Crucial BX100. Engineered to outperform a hard drive and deliver cost-effective performance, the Crucial BX100 leverages advanced flash memory technology and moves your computer beyond the outdated storage limitations of spinning discs. By transmitting data in a digital manner rather than having to seek it out on a spinning platter, the Crucial BX100 makes nearly everything on your computer faster and more efficient.
Over 15x faster than a typical hard drive*
Get more done in less time – or just have more fun. The Crucial BX100 SSD is over 15 times faster than a typical hard drive and delivers true 535 MB/s sequential reads on both compressible and incompressible data. By treating all data the same, the Crucial BX100 allows you to do everything quickly, regardless of whether you’re saving an image, accessing a ZIP file, or loading a video.
Over 2x more reliable than a typical hard drive**
Protect your data by storing it on the Crucial BX100, which is significantly more reliable than a typical hard drive. In the computer industry, storage drive reliability is measured in mean times between failures (MTBF). Most hard drives have MTBF ratings of 0.6 million hours, whereas the Crucial BX100 has a reliability rating of 1.5 million hours. In practical terms, the more reliable your drive is, the less likely it is to crash.
Nearly 2x more energy efficient than a typical hard drive***
Run your system longer and harder – using less power. With Extreme Energy Efficiency technology, the Crucial BX100 is over 90% more energy efficient than a typical hard drive. Since SSDs access data digitally rather than seeking it out on a spinning platter, they consume significantly less power.
Better value than a typical SSD
Get more out of your system – without compromising quality. At speeds up to 535 MB/s, the Crucial BX100 SSD isn’t the fastest drive on the market, but that’s squarely our intent. We painstakingly engineered the Crucial BX100 to provide a massive performance boost, while also delivering an unrivaled value among SSDs. Make the switch to the Crucial BX100 and get everything you expect from a Crucial SSD at an unexpected value.
Micron quality - a higher level of reliability.
As a brand of Micron, one of the largest flash storage manufacturers in the world, the Crucial BX100 is backed by the same quality and innovation that has produced some of the world’s most advanced memory and storage technologies. With over a thousand hours of prerelease validation testing and hundreds of SSD qualification tests, the Crucial BX100 has been thoroughly tried, tested, and proven. You’ll notice the difference.

The issue is that although those Macs use SATA II that can run at 3Gbps, the buggy controller means that many SSDs will only run at 1.5Gbps, and this drive is one of them.
I have returned this drive and replaced it with the Crucial M500, which is more expensive (and probably getting rarer now), but it uses a Marvell onboard controller that is fully compatible with the controller in the Mac and so it runs at 3Gbps.
After upgrading to Windows 10 the PC slowed considerably - start ups were taking many minutes. After much investigatory work the only thing anyone could find that wasn't up to scratch was the hard drive.
So with advice from cleverer people than me I purchased this SSD to install as a boot drive and to contain all programs etc. Installing was a breeze and then did a fresh install of Windows 10. Obviously had a lot of reorganisng to do but it has been well worth it. The PC is working like a new machine. Boot up is quick, switching from one account to the other is quick, programs load immediately and I am now just using the 3tb drive as a storage device - but will be replacing that soon.
So, very happy with my purchase. I am not a techie so cant give you any advice on spec and so on but I would say that SSD is a great improvement and this one seemed good value for money.
I'm not expert enough to give accurate comparisons as to performance, but I can say that it has made an astonishingly positive difference to the speed at which my computer loads programmes and documents - which is what I wanted. This being my only SSHD system, I cannot easily compare it to other SSHDs, but on the improvement made, the drive comes highly rated on the simple basis that it works (thus far) and works well - to the extent that an old MacBook now effectively outperforms a rather more powerful (and previously much faster) iMac with a magnetic hard-drive in general use.
The bundled licence key for cloning software does not seem to be compatible with OS X, but you can use Disk Utility for that job, and there are plenty of tutorials online for the process.
Whilst you might think you are installing a 'migration' tool, what you actually get is a 'system solution' that tries to take over your existing operarting system with it's own ideas about maintaining 'live' back-ups and system restores. Worse, it takes forever to 'launch' and, if it does actually support system migration amongst it's 101 functions, I never actually managed to find it.
To migrate my existing laptop hard drive to this SSD, I used EaseUS Todo Backup Free 6.5 (which is completly free and both finds, and lets you resize, all the partitions, including the 'factory restore' one, during the migrate).
If, like me, you are migrating from a larger hard disk (in my case a 300Gb half full) to this 250Gb SSD you will need a tool that lets you shrink the C: system partition (the later versions of the EaseUS Todo free edition do not allow you to resize partiotions, so stick to v6.5).
Wow! What a difference.
The nasty, test netbook has been transformed into something genuinely usable. The free download of Windows 10 went onto it in no time and boot takes a remarkable 8 seconds from cold to get to the desktop. On Windows 7 it would take around 1m 30s with the HGST drive.
OK, for many, it isn't worth bothering with, as the cost is such a significant proportion of the computer, but, for £60 you can really transform a laptop/PC.
If you are thinking of switching to solid state do it! I could not believe how fast this computer is now, it's much faster than my much newer laptop which is a higher spec.
Two issues I became aware of and had to address: an internet search on "SSD Alignment" will highlight the importance of doing this first IF you intend to clone an existing drive; apparently a fresh install (Windows 7 in my case) will take care of this automatically.
Secondly: if this is for a laptop, get the relevant Crucial install kit which is currently sold on Amazon as "Crucial Solid State Drive" for £17.99. This includes a Sata/USB adaptor and a licence for a free version of Acronis - this seems to take care of the alignment issue and makes cloning the existing drive as simple as its ever likely to be.
Usual caveats around backing up important data, files etc apply as always...
The drive comes free with Acronis backup, that has a handy clone tool. (note the Acronis registration code is under the black plastic packaging)
Fitted in a 7 year old dual core Dell with 2gb ram and now runs Windows 10 like a dream, boot times under 30 seconds, and zero wait times opening office on out higher end i5's
This is the best £62.15 you can spend on your PC
if your PC (desktops / servers) has the larger format drive 3.5" you will need the bracket to convert 2.5" to a 3.5" bay.
Boot up times are incredible..
