The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life. -William Moris
The book is a combination of neuroscience, philosophy and psychology. The book is divided into ten chapters Perspectives, Intelligence, Learning, Habits, Decisions and Biases, Emotions, Happiness and where author explains the connection with yourself in different situations. Every chapter starts with a inspiring quotes and the end of every chapter there are key points where you get important point from the particular chapter. The author had done lot’s of research while writing the book and it’s highly appreciable.
The words were simple and the language is lucid which eased the reading. Narration is done well. The book is free from any grammatical errors and has been perfectly edited.
All in all, a good easy book to read in one sitting.
I’ll recommend this book to all the readers who want to know more about yourself. I won’t say that reading this book entirely changes your life but I’m sure your approach towards life and many other will surely get influenced.
Overall Rating 4.5/ 5 Stars
While responding to an external stimuli, the neurons connect with each other via a chemical reaction and form a pathway. When we trying to make sense of something, other people may perceive things differently, precisely the reason for the neuron pathways not to be alike.
It may be hard to assimilate this fact, but according to the surveys conducted on various group of people by emminent psychologists, majority of our happiness stems from our behaviour, then Genetics followed by life's circumstances.
The way our brain processes emotional and physical pain is same. An example for this is, you develop a splitting headache when you are stressed out and when you are depressed for a considerable period of time, you develop an eating disorder.
It is very important to take a step back in our life to introspect, why we behave the way we do and remain true to our purpose.
The experience I derived from this book was enriching. The author has researched to a great extent and put forth his points with the help of real life examples. I loved his approach towards life especially the 'Centred Life' theory spread across four aspects namely, health, relationship, financial security, work and activities. He has made the boring text book concepts seem interesting and fascinating. The easy going language will enable you to comprehend these things. I could relate to the majority of concepts related to happiness, perspective, learning and the list goes endless. At the end, all the chapters are coherently stringed together to summarise the book.
Women are emotional beings. She doesn’t always does the logical things. We feel with our heart and think with brain. Though it is a misconception too. Feelings also reside in brain. The book tells us how the thinking and emotion play out and interact. Different people interpret things differently based on their life experiences.
Intelligence, learning and habits play an important part. Every person has different kind of intelligence and traditional IQ scales doesn’t help much here. Habits are formed by repetition and unconscious processes.
Chapter 9 is most important which tells about happiness. As per Dr Sonja Lyubomirsky happiness is dependent on
1. Life’s circumstances
Chapter 10 sums it all up.
The book is good to understand our and others motivations. How we can control the brain to be more effective and happier. This book borrowed heavily from other books but it is well researched. This presents the matter in a concise and easy to understand way. Recommended. 4/5 stars.
The author has divided the books into 10 chapters. Each chapter brings you closer and makes you aware of various aspects of life… one at a time. He narrates to you an incident, a story and then presents his views about the same. We, human beings, have a tendency to learn things better when we hear them in the form of a story. And the author succeeds in doing it really well.
The narration is simple and so is the language. You will be able to relate to it really well. The author summarizes each chapter in a page… it’s the key takeaways from the chapter.
Another amazing thing about this book is that you can read any chapter that you like. You do not compulsorily have to follow the order of the book.
I would rate this book with 4/5 stars.
