Irfan Habib is a Marxist historian and his books were criticized by Meenakshi Jain (Rama and Ayodhya) and Koenraad Elst among others. In the Ayodhya debate, the Ifan Habib group defended the Muslim view which was against the scientific consensus of the archaelogists. The famous archaeologist K K Muhammed also wrote in his autobiography that the "Irfan Habib group" was nepotist, they could cause career damage to scholars with different views, and that if you were not part of his group, you were branded "communal" or "hindutva". Prof. M G S Narayanan too writes in the foreword of the same book that Habib has poisoned not just history but culture and social life by his narrow groupism, nepotism and treachery.
Don't waste your time with this. I'd recommend to read the works of better historians, like R.C.Majumdar, Jadunath Sarkar, Sita Ram Goel (Hindu Temples - What Happened To Them: Volume 1), B.B. Lal, S.P. Gupta, K.S. Lal, S.R. Rao and Harsh Narain.
