This product was not cheap -- $76.00!! -- yet the hinges are made of cheap plastic that will immediately snap at the hinge if you absentmindedly lean on it -- which is quite easy to do if you are absorbed in what you are doing at the computer.
They seriously need to fix this hinge issue as other customers have had the same complaint.
I am going to complain and ask for satisfaction. I have only had it about 5-6 months and now it's useless. I feel as though I threw away $76.00.
The problem I had--and you might too if you like to lean back--is that the surfaces are too slippery. The keyboard slides down easily on the hard plastic and even though the mouse pad is fabric, it allowed my heavy, thumb-wheel mouse to slide also.
Easy fix! I went to Michael's and got a sheet of Fun Foam by Creatology. At 12" x 18", one sheet was plenty of material to take care of both the keyboard and mouse slides. The single unit, retail cost / sheet is $0.84. I'm not sure what the cost at large volumes would be. I *am* sure that if the manufacturer had included it, I would have given this product a perfect 5 star rating.
Happy New Year!
I looked at the instructions and thought I was going to wind up returning this, but I put the armrests on my chair (which is the cheapest chair Amazon Basics offers), and surprisingly it fit.
So I sat down and actually used it to write this review. This thing is comfortable! I have an IKEA desk that has a narrow desktop, and I can't mount a standard keyboard tray because there are drawers in the front. This is a nice compromise.
It's not perfect - if I don't have the keyboard in the right spot I get some bounce when I type. It's not unbearable but is a little annoying. Otherwise there's enough room no the sides to put a mouse and actually use it (either left or right). The mouse trays fold up and you set the keyboard tray aside to get out of the chair.
I do a lot of writing, coding, and animation work. This makes for a comfortable spot to set up my keyboard or drawing tablet. If you can't use a standard or clamp-on tray because of the shape of your desk, this is worth a look.
