Apparently, they are made with (probably on purpose) extremely cheap rubber which breaks down over time, as some rubbers will do. Three of them, started getting dry and powdery. After a large leak opened up at the inside seam, you could tear the rubber like wet cardboard, almost no effort needed. You chemistry major people will have a much better explanation, but I assume there is some sort of rubber breakdown due to oxidation, yes?
Anyway, they work great for a while. Unlike the cheaply made (but expensively sold) foam models, these have a substantial weight to them, and they stay put. And while the rubber is new and fresh, they are strong and hold up to nearly any abuse. But, mother time does not like this specific model. Perhaps they just cut corners (Imagine a Chinese manufacturer doing that!) and used the least expensive rubber they could get their hands on. Sure seems like it.
Oh, and by the way, every single leak we've ever got, all happened in the exact same place, that seam around the middle of the hole area. That's where the two pieces of rubber are heat-joined. Rather suspicious it would be so thin there. Virtually guaranteeing it will come apart sooner or later.
But, all that aside, it works great...for about a year, give or take. And at this price, which for this specific one was under 1/6th the price of an expensive memory-foam model, it isn't actually a bad deal. I was tempted to buy three or four of them, to have spares on hand for everyone. But, I'd strongly advise against that, given what I mentioned. All of ours died a horrible death, but not from loads of use, but from the rubber beginning to disintegrate. If if I'd bought multiples, the extras would be slowly disintegrating right along with the one being used. I'm going to only buy one at a time, to ensure it is fresh rubber from the Chinese factory.
One reviewer here said he's been using his for several years. I was surprised at that. None of ours made it much further than a single year, maybe a year and a half. Perhaps some sit in warehouses longer, and have already "aged" a while before you receive them. Presumably, that's what happened with all of ours, which were bought fairly close to one another.
As for the several reviewers who gave it a less than favorable review simply because it was "too hard", LOL to that. It's as hard as you make it. Want it softer, umm....inflate it less, duh!
And yes, it stinks when you first get it. So what? Odd that people want a cheap rubber product from a Chinese factor to smell like roses right out of the box. That's some high expectations for an inexpensive product.
If this were made here, with better rubber, and the top and bottom were joined together with longevity in mind, it would probably last for decades. Eons, maybe. You'd be passing them on to your great-great-grandchildren, who'd be thrilled their aching backsides are luxuriating in the same butt-cushion their ancestors used back in the days of the internet, Amazon shopping, and when people actually enjoyed the music of Taylor Swift.
In conclusion, ladies and germs, the only real problem is the eventual disintegration of the rubber. Other than that, it works well. Just buy a new one every year. It will take you like six years to equal the cost of the crazy-expensive ones here.
