UPDATE 2/17/2017: Both Auto-Lock gates are still going strong - the fix fixed the problem and these are great gates!
I had Cardinal Duragates for years and thought I'd try this "Auto-Lock" gate to child-proof for our grandson.
Many of the newest reviews mentioned that the latch pin broke off immediately or within a few months, but I figured that was a temporary problem that had probably been fixed by now, especially since older reviews didn't mention it.
So I ordered 2 "Auto-Lock" gates. After install, one broke immediately (within 3 days) but the other lasted 3 months, probably because we sort of babied it after the first one broke. I tried various methods of rigging around the pin failure, but, as other reviewers have said, they really aren't workable.
Just before Christmas, I researched the company and found their customer service and public relations email addresses and wrote them about my issues. Right after the weekend, I received a very nice email from Naomi who said she would immediately send out replacement latches if I gave her my address, which I did.
The next day, I received a phone call from a Georgia area code. When I answered, a man introduced himself as Craig Heiser. From my research I had learned that was the Cardinal CEO so I was pretty impressed! He explained that they're a small company and so everybody does a lot of things. He was pleased that Naomi had already contacted me and said around the time I bought my gates they had a supplier problem with that very part, which they were trying to correct.
Now a month into service the new latches are working perfectly. I now have SIX Cardinal gates (2 Auto-Lock and 4 Dura-Gate) in 2 homes and am very pleased with their products AND their service.
Way to go, Cardinal Gates!
We used this at the top of our staircase. We wanted a hardware mounted swing gate, without the bar on the bottom. Bar-less was important because we were worried about the tripping hazard of having a bar going across the bottom as sometimes found in other types of gates, especially at the top of the stairs.
In the gate market overall (other gates), it is quite common to come across duds (not this one), usually with one of or a combination of: 1) Faulty plastic latches; 2) Complex / difficult installation; 3) Lack of sturdiness, easily knocked over or opened; 4) Cheap materials.
Fortunately – in my opinion - this gate has none of these issues. It is very well made, with great latch / closing system, very sturdy (I even tried sitting on it like in the videos), and uses high quality materials that give confidence.
I am not very handy, so expected some challenges with installation. The installation took me a good 20-30 minutes, but it was fairly easy and with no issues – I wanted to reinforce the drywall a bit, which was hollow inside so I wanted to make sure it had an extra strong grip. It looks good I think, my wife was impressed with the results.
I especially liked the flexibility of the installation, there is the ability to adjust the gate to fit once you put on the brackets, just in case you are a little off. I also liked the double swing option, and the fact that they included a stopper in case you only want it to swing one way.
Contrary to a small number of other reviews, I did not find the latch difficult to pull up at all, even when holding a baby. Neither does my wife, who is of relatively small build. It is a clever latch system, and I think it works quite well.
Overall, a well thought out, sturdy gate which we feel confident will safely protect our son from the stairs.
