Many of the folks interviewed were also first CTOs in some fairly lofty companies, so this is a less hands-on-CTO relevant work (something that doesn't seem to exist)

This is not a book of pre-digested facts and job-descriptions, but is a narrative that requires getting to know each of the subjects. That said, some people are more interesting than others. Many of the subjects seemed to have similar backgrounds, and perhaps, a little more variety would have been nice. I would recommend this to someone keen on the subject. It is an interesting approach and well thought-out.
