Modern-day medicine has provided the means to prolong life indefinitely, given the absence of any progressive disease. Intravenous feeding and other means can sustain a life for years if not for an entire lifetime, but at a terrible financial cost and wrenching emotional agony on the part of the family. Lives have been permanently scarred if not ruined entirely as the opposing agendas of the medical and legal professions are played out in the public arena. There will never be an end to this debate, nor can there be.
