There are six items in this set including the three cases. The cases are all sturdy cotton. It is disappointing that the pillowcases are not in black... that is clearly stated in the product description and I knew it when I bought it, but I wish that they were black, rather than natural.
The mattress and both pillows are very high quality and as firmly stuffed with buckwheat as possible... no skimping on the stuffing, if you like rock-hard maximum buckwheat, that is what you have right from the package. High quality zippers allow you to remove or add stuffing to your liking. I did so for the bolster, removing almost half the buckwheat... now I have enough extra to restuff my old buckwheat neck pillow. Bonus.
I did not remove any stuffing from the mattress, it is perfect for my purposes, I could immediately feel the springiness compared to my old tired cotton, and my shredded latex provides the softness on top. If you are sleeping right on the buckwheat, unless you prefer insanely firm sleeping surfaces, you will want to remove some buckwheat, which you can do individually from each of the dozen-plus lateral compartments to customize the support exactly to your body's pressure points if you wish. Since I do not sleep directly on it I have not needed the futon cover, but the cover is high quality and I plan to use it for another purpose.
I have not used the pillow yet, as I do not use buckwheat as a head pillow and have not adjusted the filling for lumbar support yet, but it is also super-stuffed and high quality. I'm sure it will work well as a lumbar pillow and last for many years.
I have machine washed all the cases per the printed directions and they were absolutely fine.
This product is not cheap when you factor in the shipping to the US, yet the value is extremely good compared to locally-made futons and other bedding components I have purchased, which are also not at all cheap. I paid nearly as much shipped for my shredded latex topper, which did not come with a cover or two pillows like this does, although it has the same compartmentalized design. The value is also very good in terms of cost per buckwheat volume when you compare it to, say, various buckwheat pillows.
The product tags indicate that these are all made in Poland. There is absolutely no chemical odor or anything, for those who worry about such things.
This product took a long time to ship internationally and on my end it had to go through the hands of the USPS, which is always scary. The Post Office attempted to destroy it, and failing that, tried to not deliver it at all, (they told me it was too large for their regulations... why did you contract to take it then???) but eventually I was able to extract it from their clutches by waiting in line at the post office for an hour and eventually receiving my 50 pound package barely contained by shredded cardboard. However, the inner packaging had just barely managed to protect the contents from the malevolent postal fiends.
This is close to a five-star product. Half a star off because the covers don't match, and half off because, if you live in the US, you have to risk a $300 purchase to the hands of the USPS, which is an almost unacceptable level of risk and anxiety. I recommend that you send a note to the shipper when you make the purchase requesting they place an extra plastic bag around the contents, and then watch the tracking like a hawk so that you know when the postal service pretended to try to deliver it. When you go to pick it up (you only have 15 days before they send it back to Germany, so don't delay), take someone with you who can lift 50 pounds if you can't do it yourself, and a station wagon/SUV/etc that can fit the box. If you have a living/transportation situation where you are really depending on the package being delivered to your door, you should not buy this product.
