When Nooh flees from the wrath of Vasant Salvi, the son of a powerful politician, he knows at stake is not just his own life but the fates of the orphans he cares for. Ashraf Engineer is a former journalist. For more than 16 years, he worked with some of India’s leading media houses and handled a variety of assignments in their newsrooms. In 2011, he took leave of absence to travel to Kabul, Afghanistan, to train journalists there. Later that year, upon his return to Mumbai, Ashraf moved to the corporate sector as a content and insights specialist, going on to become a consultant in the communication and marketing space. He lives in Mumbai.

Ashraf Engineer draws the reader into Nooh's life in his book Bricks of Blood. The protagonist deals with important issues that affect Mumbai like gentrification, the police-builder-politician-goon nexus and its effects on the locals. The book is a subtle commentary on the outcome of globalisation and one man’s fight to retain what is his. The graphic violence in the book is gut-wrenching and realistic. The book also tells a tale of love, loss, greed, corruption, politics revenge and friendship. The juxtaposition of Nooh as a hyper-nationalist army man steeped in bloodlust and Nooh as a savior of orphans, brings out binaries that confound the reader. Similarly, each character is carefully crafted and Engineer manages to bring out subtle nuances that take the reader on several fascinating journeys that manifest themselves as sub-plots. Engineer paints with his words, transports us into unfamiliar worlds that surround us and brings to life characters that embody contradictions. This book is a must-read for all those who savour good writing.

Bricks of blood is a gritty story that keeps one moving from page to page at nerve wrenching pace. Also the fact that its set in surroundings thats familiar to our times makes it more believable. It does address the current political social issues in a fictional manner. The violence is very realistic and graphic, make me say that is can be the plot of a graphic novel. I love fiction and this is one such work that i devoured in no time!! Great read and now am waiting for more.

This book is going to make you feel a range of emotions! Every time my reading was interrupted, I couldn’t wait to get back to the book. Ashraf is not only a brilliant writer but an amazing storyteller and that comes across in the way the story is so well formed. During the course of the story, I felt my mind dive deeper and deeper in to the story and the characters. I can’t wait for book number 2, meanwhile, I am going to read this again!

And there's the right kind somstimes..fictional yet something a common mind yearns all the time against all limitations real life constrains you with. At times the gore is a tad too much..but never more thàn what can meld into the point in time theme. A different take on the good wins over evil theme, presented in such superlative yet very readable language

Brilliant storytelling

I'm a slow reader but finished this one in a day. That itself says a lot about the writer and his impeccable style of narration. A true page-turner, the story makes you want to go back to the book each time you shut it for some reason - wanting to know what's next. A simple story of how karma can bite has been peppered with the magic dust of love, values and memories. The ebb and flow of the past and the present is mesmerising and only someone Sufi at heart could write it. Hope the next one from the author comes soon.
