🌷Book Review. .
🌷 The Binding by Bridget Collins. .
🌷Genre : Fantasy Historical fiction.
.
🌷Storyline :
Q. Did the story have a good beginning?
A. I'm in 😍 with the beginning. It just took my expectations for the book to another level.
Q. What was the most exciting moment in the book?
A. Burning up of books. Every single time they burn. I know it's not a thing to be excited about but it's fictional. 😅.
Q. What do you think was the most important point or climax of the novel?
A. Hostility towards Gay people and exploitation of the poor by the rich.
Q. Were you happy with the ending?
A. Hell yeah. It was so satisfying. .
🌷Setting:
Q. Were the descriptions good?
A. It's a literary genius. The descriptions were so beautiful that they make my soul ache. .
🌷Characters :
Q. Pick up the main character in the novel you studied.
A. Emmett Farmer and Lucian Darnay.
Q. Did you like them? Why and why not?
A. I absolutely in awe with them. They found each other and they found themselves and they never mind hiding it. They loved what they are and if given a chance they wouldn't have cared a shit for staying with each other.
Q. If you were describing them to a stranger what words would you use?
A. Love, Passion, Deception
Q. If you could ask them any questions, what would you ask?
A. I would have asked them how far can they go for being with each other. .
🌷Theme:
Q. If you had to describe what the novel was about in one sentence how would you describe it.
A. Star crossed lovers bound by destiny but separate for being bound into books.
Q. At what points in the novel was the main issue obvious.
A. In the second part when Emmett got back his memories.
🌷Language :
Q. Did you find this book easy to read?
A. The topic was new it me. I hvnt read anything like this before and I curse myself for not to. The book can be a bit draggy for those who are not comfortable with gay romance.
🌷Conclusion :
Q. Would you recommend this book and why?
A. It deals with issues which don't usually talk about or have negative views about. This book has a voice in itself. It celebrates Love in all it's shades. Do give it a try. It's fast paced and beautiful written.

The book begins with a young farmer “Emmett” working in the fields, when a strange letter arrives summoning him away from his family. He is to begin an apprenticeship as a Bookbinder—a vocation that arouses fear, superstition, and prejudice among their small community but one neither he nor his parents can afford to refuse.

For as long as he can recall, Emmett has been drawn to books, even though they are strictly forbidden. Bookbinding is a sacred calling, Seredith informs her new apprentice, and he is a binder born. Under the old woman’s watchful eye, Emmett learns to hand-craft the elegant leather-bound volumes. Within each one they will capture something unique and extraordinary: a memory. If there’s something you want to forget, a binder can help. If there’s something you need to erase, they can assist. Within the pages of the books they create, secrets are concealed and the past is locked away. In a vault under his mentor’s workshop, rows upon rows of books are meticulously stored.

But while Seredith is an artisan, there are others of their kind, avaricious and amoral tradesman who use their talents for dark ends—and just as Emmett begins to settle into his new circumstances, he makes an astonishing discovery: one of the books has his name on it. Soon, everything he thought he understood about his life will be dramatically rewritten.

The Binding in the beginning is extremely slow, however eventually you develop a sense of interest. This is a fabulous book, but make sure you keep patience. Overall this was an incredible work and I cannot recommend this book enough. Luxuriously detailed yet briskly suspenseful . . . a striking literary fantasy informed by Bridget’s deep knowledge.

This book is oh so pretty and oh so good. The beginning is a bit slow but enjoyable if you like reading about the process of book making. So yes, part one is extremely slow. It builds up enough mysteries and momentum in part one, then throws you into slow chaos in part two, and fully blown-out chaos in part three. And at the end you come out saying, "Wow! What a roller-coaster!"

Pros:
- Different type of setting
- Books
- People cherishing books (well, one of them at least)
- Emmett and Lucian were so much fun to read
- Strong-willed characters

Cons:
- Worst father in literature
- Bad families all around

Beware:
- Books with your names on them
- Families who don't care about your happiness.

Under My Lantern
2.0 out of 5 starsFell short of the hype
12 June 2019

I picked this book because of the beautiful cover and an interesting blurb. Since I have been recently active on #bookstagram this book has popped up quite a lot.

However the book is a slow read and story doesn’t do justice to the concept that the author has chosen.
One thing I would like to commend the author #bridgetcollins On is her world building. Though slow it is meticulous enough for you to not only imagine the scenario but the room, the smells and what the characters are feeling as if you are there.

Overall a 2.5/5 which will nonetheless look beautiful on my bookshelf

It’s strange how much this book has been marketed and hyped up.
It’s just ok. It’s quite slow paced and while the basic storyline is sweet, (yes, I said, ‘sweet’) it lacks intensity. Also, I personally didn’t like the author’s writing style - I felt it didn’t match the time period.

The name and cover drew me to this book. Reading it was something else. Even while dealing with a dark subject of binding of memories, it avoids a depressing ending and leaves you with a smile. I can't wait to see the movie...
