‘Aditya’ is a psychiatrist who believes in working ethically and honours his work. His better half, Prachi, is his support system and their personalities perfectly complement each other. The author has done an intensive research about the types of cases that the psychiatrists handle and what complications await them. The number of characters in the story is limited and the readers can understand them better.
The story revolves around the life of Aditya, who comes at a crossroads- to choose between the reminiscent bump and his job and treat his ex’s son. Deepa’s (Aditya’s ex) entry into Aditya’s life came with a territory. Unlike all the other novellas where the protagonist is intentionally shown weak in the knees just to fit an intimate scene in the book, this novella comes with a different flavor altogether.
With simple, yet effective language, the author struck the right chord and her narration appeals to the readers. and Aditya honored it. Unlike the other fiction novellas, where there are mushy love tales and everything ends in the cloud cuckoo land, this book offers different and enriching content. The book has a personal and emotional touch. With a clear-cut explanation of the medical terms and a valid side story, the novella is interesting. There are editing errors but they can be ignored owing to the strong and gripping plot.
The title of the book is fine. The blurb is apt. Overall, the simplicity of book is what makes it a marvelous feat!
A broad spectrum of mental disorders has been dealt with by the author with such compassion, empathy and sensitivity that it arouses a gamut of emotions ranging from despair to hope, sorrow to anger .. to Optimism. And the book also serves to educate the readers that the brains of people with various mental issues are basically wired differently and that it is not a social stigma at all. They need NOT be Castaways. But sadly, "Even today, in many families, people push these things under the carpet." To be "discreet" is of paramount importance after all!
"Diaries are just an account of events, but journals reflect people's innermost thoughts and feelings about things that have happened."
Deepa.. How does this "always smiling and cheerful" young woman come to a point in her life when she makes this very painful journal entry?
"I have never harmed anyone. Why is God so unkind?"
Why is her quest for light at the end of the tunnel so dark and deep and endless?
"Something tells me that though I am stuck in a dark tunnel right now, I must keep walking ahead with confidence. There will be light at the end of the tunnel, ..."
You can find the answers to these questions in 'Beneath a Rougher Sea'.
So, is the book very dark and gloomy because of its subject matter? Not at all! There is a calm and beautiful blue sea too! Thanks to the way the author has painted these lovely images with her apt choice of words:
"Next day, they took the early morning flight to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur. The drive from the airport to the resort was a short one. The place was serene and well-run; the travel agency had booked them a sea-facing cottage. This cottage was on stilts and had a view straight out of an artist's imagination. The sea was a beautiful, calm blue."
"The beach was a good twenty minutes' drive, but the best part was there weren't any tourists. They sat down on the fine, white sand, quite mesmerised, as the sun moved down languidly, finally disappearing behind a small hill on some distant island. They soaked in the soft twilight and only when it started getting dark did they get up to leave."
The tender romance between Aditya and his wife while they dine at a restaurant that serves Thai food does help to dispel the darkness that engulfs the reader while reading about the sufferings - not only of the many characters who have various mental disorders, but their caregivers too.
And the best part is that the novel ends on an optimistic note.
And the artistic book cover as I see it:
People with mental disorders may often feel as though they get submerged under swirling waters and also get entangled in a net. They are trapped and with flailing arms and legs they try to resurface but with little success. They almost drown but wait! There is light at the end of the tunnel after all! They see a lone hand reaching out to lift them up. That could be a doctor, a caring family member or a friend... But that is all that they need in that moment of crisis. That unconditional support and depending upon the nature of the problem, sustained treatment involving medicines too of course.
Cover - the cover id absolutely lovely, meaningful and related to the title. Blue depicting the calm and the blues. How after the dark there is dawn, after chaos there is calm.
Theme - psychological, love, friendship, turmoil.
Narrative - easy flowing, addictive and interesting.
Vocabulary - medical terms are used and are well defined. Easy to read.
Will I read authors next book- this being her book, which is her first in english. I will surely read.
About the book - it is a story of a dr how he manages to break his heart and also makes his decision to heal people early in his teenage years.
He sees various patients with various psychological problems and heals them and helps.
But life always has to snap back with a curveball, a little descend comes into his life. And he gets back up only stronger.
Though his failures or downfalls were not much focused upon, everything else was beautifully put up.
An amazing book to dig in during journeys or anytime why not!!
Recommended - it has a different outlook and a totally different story other than the typical love stories. I say go for it! Don't miss on this gem.
