I picked up 2 of these on November 1st, 2012 for $14.90. I would say this is a techies dream, but now a days I think we're all pretty much there. I installed one of these next to my bed and one next to my living room chair. Now along with a few extra charger cords for my Iphone 5, Ipad1, Ipad4, and HTC thunderbolt I have the ability to charge anywhere.
My Ipads do say "not charging" while plugged in, and seem to take a while to charge, BUT they DO charge!! This is also with out the use of the power adaptor, Just plugged right into the USB. The cell phones work and charge rapidly and with out problems.
The install of this device is very simple, and only requires the use of a screwdriver. Just plug the surge protector into your outlet and plug in something you know works to test it out. Then remove the surge protector from the outlet, using a screwdriver remove the screw on the outlet face plate, now plug your surge protector back in, and tighten the provided screw. Easy as pie!
(I'm currently working on about 500 reviews, I order pretty much everything from Amazon but I (until now) never review. So I'm going through the years of orders to catch up, and try and give back to the system. If your reading this PLEASE hit the button saying this review was helpful, it does help out the people that make reviews, and trust me it takes a lot of time... I try not to make long winded reviews, all of the specs are in the product description)
These are great if you have outlets where you are going to set them down, like at your bedside or by the couch.
You will always need a portable wall charger and a car charger, of course. I suggest you get these with 2.1 amps/10 watt, the max for Apple devices, as you are usually in a hurry when you are using them. However, this has two unbeatable advantages over portable USB chargers:
1. They are always there.
2. You always know where they are.
You might want to get some of the 6-foot Apple charger cables, then you can use the device while it is charging. They are really handy.
The two USB ports are really handy for charging the phone and the Kindle - I can just leave the cords in the charger, and plug my device into it whenever I need to, and don't have to have cords running out of my computer all the time.
Also handy is the screw that comes with it that can be used to more permanently attach the thing to a standard two-socket outlet (this replaces the plastic facing that is normally used, and the screw goes through the middle screw of the outlet).
Only disadvantage to this is the shaft - it adds wonderful structural support when it's plugged in, but it does get in the way of being able to use this thing in places in which the shaft bumps into the wall before the plugs actually go into the sockets.
