Author is known for her beautiful portray of character and the relationship between them and she has succeeded here as well. Although, the leap she has taken from present to flashback, character to character might confuse the readers.
I loved the beautiful illustration and the design of the pages and the cover of the hard bound copy i bought.
Divakaruni seamlessly makes us travel through the rural roads and sweets of India to modern and hasty life in US. As you turn through the pages, characters build up as the swinging pendulum moves across time showing one's passionate love for Bengali sweets to a girl straddling between cultures in a foreign land to the one with painted image of stereotypical rebel. Each and every character is an artwork which Divakaruni has contemplated with beautiful and languorous prose. While focusing primarily on women, and yet it touches the support by men, it proposes a story where no one crumbles down to the betrayal by a lover, a husband and a father. It's a heart touching story about how the life of these three women takes topsy turvy turns in its own course and how they had dreams which were not regressive, rather than, just being different. It's a must read!
This book weaves the tale of three generations and highlights various mother-daughter relationships.
Leaving you with a fascinating quote :
" Ebb and flow, ebb and flow, our lives. Is that why we're fascinated by the steadfastness of stars ? "
Full marks to this gorgeous novel.
It is true we extract happiness from events that have been gifted to us by other people but things that truly make us happy are the ones we gift ourselves. This kind of happiness can never be taken back by somebody else. An alarming truth but a wonderfully crafted novel by one of the finest authors of this generation.
