Mattel has discontinued the mobile app, and as of this week taken down the web app. We bought several of these for our daughter because she loved it so much, but now they are completely useless.
Please do not buy this item as it will not work without the app that is no longer available.
She loves designing clothes, and it took her only a few minutes to master using the app which was free. I probably will want to keep spare ink for the printer on hand but really, it doesn't take up any more ink than printing every day items, like recipes, craft instructions etc. I just make sure she asks me before printing in case I am low on ink and give her a limit on the amount she can print each time she uses it. You can buy more fabric paper when she runs out which at first glance I think cost around $12 for 8-10 sheets. Also, I wanted to let you know that when I purchased this on Amazon it was $20 cheaper than in my Walmart!
The PACKAGING is pretty frustrating. They DO NOT want anyone getting into this package by accident and removing this Barbie doll. And believe me, without a set of scissors and some patience, no one is getting Barbie out of her package. Once all clips and bands were removed (by an adult of course), we noticed that no matter how close we cut them, there are remnants of the plastic tag holders still stuck in Barbie's head. If you rub your hand over the surface of her head, you can feel them sticking out.
The KIT comes with the Barbie, eight (8) sheets of fabric paper, each of which contains: skirt front, skirt back, top front and top back. It also comes with some assorted reusable "final touches" - necklaces and baubles than can be used to complement Barbie's outfits. The fabric is somewhat of a cross between actual fabric and sticker paper. I would say it's basically a re-stickable sticker. An improvement in fabric quality is necessary for sure.
The APP is a free download from the Apple App store or from Google Play (or you can use a website - which we did not do), and you do not have to have the doll and kit to use the app. More on that later.
As I read through the instructions, the first thing that struck me was this disclosure: "We reserved the right to terminate App and website after 01/15/2016." Essentially saying that if this product doesn't sell like we hope it will sell, we can discontinue it on January 15, 2016. So, essentially, it's possible that this is toy that will not be able to be used (as it was fully intended to be used) after a short period of time. Not good.
The app is perhaps the best part of the entire kit and you don't need to have the doll in order to use it. It's a free download and it allows the child to design a multitude of outfits. From colors and patterns, to accessories and lace; it's a really cool and vibrant interface that my daughter really enjoyed using. However, with only 8 sheets of fabric paper, many of your designs will not be able to be implemented.
The Barbie doll itself is very disappointing. It does not move like a typical Barbie doll - in fact, only the arms move. It's not very substantial either. I understand that the doll is designed to be a "fashion" doll but it doesn't even stand on its own. If that's the case, at least provide some sort of stand so that it can be displayed. This is a major missed opportunity and makes the toy far less enjoyable, at least in my view and my daughter's view.
Maybe most frustrating (even more frustrating than the packaging) was the process of printing from the app. I tested my printer before we tried to print from the app in order to be sure that everything was working properly (it was) and I followed the instructions for the fabric paper as described. Remove all other paper from the printer, insert only one piece of fabric paper into the printer and press print. After finally connecting to my printer, I constantly received a "paper out" notification and the fabric paper would be fed straight through the printer. I tried OVER 20 TIMES to get the paper to work. Finally, I decided to make a video showing that it didn't work - and that's when it DID work. We were only able to print one sheet in about 20 minutes of trying and thus, we did not try anymore. Needless to say, the printing process can be a bear and is not guaranteed to work properly, as we experienced. However, once we did get the fabric printed, we saw that the design did print properly on the paper and the colors were well represented (see photo).
The Barbie Fashion Design Maker doll is a clever idea and it definitely has some potential. However, my daughter summed it up nicely when she said "I like the app a lot but really it's just like putting stickers on a Barbie doll." I could not agree more. The design aspect is excellent but the creating and application aspects are very, very poor. From a parent's standpoint, I would be very disappointed if I spent $35 - $50 on this product and therefore I cannot recommend it.
