So...this gets interesting. Melinda from Aukey customer support emailed me asking if I would update or take down my negative review if they sent me a replacement. That sounded great...and I responded: "Sure! Send me one that works and I’ll change my review to positive." Well...they did send a replacement...but by accident sent it to my daughter in another town. I had purchased her one in June which I don't know if it works or not...so I let them know of the mistake. So then they sent another to me! Customer Support over the top awesome! Still...it has been bugging me that a company asks customers to change their reviews. Kinda borders on review fraud...I can't help but think that many other negative reviews have been changed or deleted by this tactic. Also makes me wonder if this is cool with Amazon's review policies. But hey...I told her I'd do it if the new one works. It came today...AND IT DOES NOT WORK! I've had it on a charger all day and the charging light still does nothing but stay red. No way I'm plugging this thing into my $849 iPhone 7 (which is AWESOME!) because I'm afraid it may fry it. I just can't believe that they sent me THREE batteries that don't work! Wouldn't you think at this point they would actually check to see if the one they were sending me actually worked? Quality control simply has to be abysmal. If I could give less than one star I would...this is ridiculous. I'm posting a photo of the red charging light after being on the charger all day (I've used numerous chargers) along with the manual that clearly states how the charging light is supposed to work. As I said in my original review, it's a shame because I'd love to have a battery that I could charge with a lightning charger. I own two other batteries (Anker and Dark Energy) that are not only fantastic but also have equally fantastic charging lights...that are not only easy to see (the Aukey one isn't) but actually work. Unfortunately they don't have lightning input (both micro-usb). Hopefully another company will come out with a product with lightning input that actually works. Sorry Melinda...but three bad batteries out of three...
Alright...I have changed my review from one star to FOUR! I realize that is a massive jump...I'll explain why. Even after my previous issues I decided to be a thrill-seeker and try the battery...lights messed up or not. I've found I really like it! Yes, the lights don't work correctly and are a complete joke...they would be better off skipping that part altogether. But I've learned to simply ignore the colors...since they are completely random and tell me nothing about charge levels. Sometimes it's red, sometimes green, rarely even white...but this means nothing. I've docked a star for this...should probably be more and like I said at first I was giving the entire unit one star. But other than this really lame issue the battery is quite awesome! It's compact, charges with a Lightning cable (unlike pretty much every other battery out there), and is very inexpensive and thus a great bargain. It also comes with a small USB to Lightning cable. When my phone is not charging I plug this baby in to my Apple charger. Oftentimes I'll need a phone charge and be messing around the house or hanging out on the couch...I'll plug in the Aukey battery and just let it hang off the end of my iPhone 7. So there...I've been feeling guilty about leaving a one-star review for a product that I've grown to like and use. Just keep in mind that the charging light is useless...
Let's just suppose for a moment that this is all in my head. If the battery is too low to charge out, why not keep one half one one percent reserve power to run the tiny red light? Or even better yet, make the red light blink if it's truly not able to charge out. Instead it just turns into a baffling black lump of plastic until I get home, and this could all be fixed by changing a line or two of code at the factory.
Anyway, when these things do work, they charge my 5S at about 1% per minute which is cool.
The first product I got was defective, charged very slowly, and didn't hold it's charge for more than a couple weeks. If I left it in my bag for a couple weeks and then pull it out to charge my phone, it was frequently dead. After I posted a review saying as much, Aukey quickly offered to send a replacement which arrived right away. After a month of testing, that product works well. It still charges relatively slowly (maybe ~6 hours for a full charge, which can fill an iPhone 5S 1.5 times, about), but it keeps it's charge now, which is the most important thing to me. The charging light is a little confusing too (red, green, white, and sometimes it will stay on red long after it's charged until you start drawing from it), but that's fine.
It's discouraging that their QC isn't better, and they were pushy and kept asking me to change my review even before I was finished testing. But ultimately I'm happy with the product that I've got now.
