Assortative Mating and Partner Influence: Problem Behavior Across the Life Course Paperback – Import, 1 Oct 2012
Why do individuals select romantic partners who usedrugs, are criminals, or have mental health problems, a choicethateventually puts them and their children at increased riskfornegative developmental outcomes? Theoretically, assortativematingand partner influence are both plausible explanations. Results froma systematic literature review found that the researchis split. All cross-sectional, retrospective studies except onesupportedassortative mating over partner influence. In contrast, allprospective studies supported partner influence. Studyingtheproblem behaviors of romantic couples across the life courseischallenging and differences in findings likely result from anumberof methodological obstacles. The aim of this study was tousedyadic data from the Rochester Youth Development Study andtheRochester Intergenerational Study to examine thesecompetinghypotheses. Partial correlations and actor-partnerinterdependencemodels estimated social homogamy, partnersimilarity, assortativemating, contagion, and partner influenceeffects. Heterotypicassociations, different types of romanticrelationships, and genderdifferences were also explored. Althoughsocial homogamy andpartner similarity on problem behavior isevident, little supportfor assortative mating, except on drug use,and virtually nosupport for partner influence is found using theRochester data.Findings do indicate, however, that a comprehensiveexplanation ofpartner similarity requires a refined considerationof heterotypicproblem behaviors across the life course.
