Product description

With the new Arduino M0 pro board, the more creative individual will have the potential to create one’s most imaginative and new ideas for IoT devices, wearable technologies, high tech automation, wild robotics and other not yet thinkable adventures in the world of makers. The Arduino M0 pro represents a simple, yet powerful, 32-bit extension of the Arduino UNO platform. The board is powered by Atmel’s SAMD21 MCU, featuring a 32-bit ARM Cortex M0 core. With the addition of the M0 board, the Arduino family becomes larger with a new member providing increased performance. The power of its Atmel’s core gives this board an upgraded flexibility and boosts the scope of projects one can think of and make; moreover, it makes the M0 Pro the ideal educational tool for learning about 32-bit application development. Atmel’s Embedded Debugger (EDBG), integrated in the board, provides a full debug interface with no need for additional hardware, making debugging much easier. EDBG additionally supports a virtual COM port for device programming and traditional Arduino boot loader functionality uses.

Works as expected, tested with the latest arduino version.
The debugger comes with old firmware, but it is update-able through atmel studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice processor - makes older Arduino/AVR setups seem like the 'Model T'

Great update on a somewhat long-in-the-tooth system.

Arduino boards are widely used in hardware control projects. Unfortunately, the original Arduino processor has a tiny bit of RAM (1 k bytes), a bit more flash (16 kB) and a roaring clock speed of 10 MHz (or 20 MHz in certain versions). It was based on the AVR 8 bit core and, for its time (around 1900?) was a nice piece of silicon. But that time has long passed and companies are still selling Arduino boards with these crippled processors. What's more, systems equipped with old-style Arduino processors are widely sold as robot controllers - where they can barely support a few PWM channels and a few pseudo-real-time peripherals bring the system to its knees - and frustrate the h__l out of the buyers.

The M0 Pro is a breakout from these handcuffs - and a big puzzle to many first-time users - as it used the ARM M0 processor, a radically different device from the old AVR unit. It supports 32 kBytes of SRAM and 256 kBytes of flash and can operate with a 48 MHz clock.

The biggest difference, IMHO, is the ARM Cortex-M0+ architecture. I have been building ARM Cortex-based systems for 15 years and really, really like them - they are rationally designed and don't make compromises with older architectures for compatibility - hence many of the whines from people who switch over from older AVR-based systems to Cortex systems.

The M0 Pro is a compromise - yes, it doesn't bring out out all the I/O pins to the external connectors and doesn't implement all the comm devices available on the part - well, so what? If you want a hardware drop-in replacement for an AVR-based system you can expect some compromises.

One of the biggest puzzles to new users is the dual port setup - a 'programming' port and a 'USB' port - update your development system and make sure you have the correct drivers and all is good. If you are using Windoze I recommend going to Win 10 - the Win 7 drivers are a bit of a mishmash and need much hand-holding to work.

I love this board - it can run free-RTOS w/o breaking a sweat and run-of-the-mill AVR based devices actually do what they are advertised to do (for example, the Elegoo 'Smart' robot kit 1.0).
