Product description

Review

"Architectural Voices contains the first-ever frank and honest narration made by the featured Indian architects about their journey and understanding of the profession and architectural practice, which is sure to go a long way in helping and directing the younger generation of architects in making appropriate choices in the profession. [...] Architectural Voices of India holds the distinction of being perhaps the first and the only book which dares to bring out an entire gamut of architecture and architectural practices in India through the eyes of none other than the champions of the profession. Accordingly, it contains valuable information, ideas and approaches which can help in leveraging the profession in the right direction. [...] The book will remain unique, by virtue of having the distinction of being the first comprehensive book dedicated to the Indian architecture. It must find appropriate place and should form an integral part of academic circles of the profession, especially the libraries of the architecture schools."Professor Jit Kumar GuptaFounder Director of College of Architecture, IET, BhaddalZingyHomes, 28.11.2017"Conducted and edited by Ar. Apurva Bose Dutta, this new publication offers a kaleidoscopic overview of post-independence architecture of India and a nearer view into the last three decades. [...] A must read for all students and young architects who are in need of direction for their own careers, this book can provide studied insights and critical thoughts."Professor Sathya Prakash VaranashiRV College of ArchitectureIndian Architect & Builder, January 2018"Architects and planners, being in a creative field in which imagination has no boundaries, reveal much diversity in their building genres, philosophies, theories, specialisations, visions and handling of core issues of architecture. This book not only celebrates this diversity but also builds a framework in which architecture and its various facets - its role, education standards, trending themes, the social responsibility of architects and the way forward - can be discussed. [...] Written for the architecture and building industry, the students' community and the general readers, the book is a step in bridging the gap between the industry, built environment and the people. Through thoughts, values and visions, the book also brings out the complexity as well as the simplicity in the field of architecture and building."L'Avenir Elevator Digest, December 2017"The design dialogue between the author and the eminent design personalities makes an interesting read for not only those that are part of the design fraternity but also for a layman to understand the nuances of architecture and the scenario of urban development across the country. The language is fluid and easy to understand for the reader. [...] Architecture is indeed an integral part of everyone's daily life and irrespective of the on-going discussion on whether architecture shapes the society or the society influences the architects, the idea of writing about the architects who unlike their western counterparts seldom write about themselves or their work is worth appreciating."BuildoTech, October-December 2017"Apurva needs to be complimented on taking the road less travelled. Very few young architects would like to make a profession out of architectural writing-here is to a determined one!"Rajnish WattasFormer Principal of Chandigarh College of ArchitectureArchitecture+Design, February 2018"Using her in depth understanding of the profession and experience in journalism, Bose highlights the impact of global and local influences on Indian architecture. She also raises current issues of quality of architectural education, importance of industry training and studio learning, sustainability, creating green and user friendly buildings, affordable housing and smart cities. A delightful and informative read for students of architecture as well as those with a love for buildings."Geetu VaidThe Tribune (North India)"From discussions around their individual journeys to the state of our cities, role of an architect, and architectural education, the book presents "oral histories" of architects who have shaped the landscape of the country. Each interview also carries a glimpse into the personal lives of the architects. The book thus moves from their early lives to the processes within their minds to the drawing boards in their respective studios, framing the architectural scene in the country. [...] It brings to memory the famous 1932 photograph, Lunch Atop a Skyscraper, where 11 Rockefeller Centre construction workers are seated casually, eating lunch across a beam, a symbol of both resilience and ambition all at once. Even as one questions the merit of the profession these days, these interviews are a reminder that thought and conviction has made many a good building in the country."The Indian Express, May 2018
