In short a very good read for all people engaged in manufacturing and distribution of consumer good or brown goods even though the book is on auto component industry as the problems are universal.
The examples of lunch buffet and overhead water tank etc., are something that readers (esp. in India) experience in day to day life and can relate to TOC application in the industry covered in the book.
I bought a kindle version of the book so not sure whether there are any Supply Chain illustrations/ diagrams to explain challenges and concepts in the hard copy. If not, maybe in the next edition these can be added as an appendix to help understand the way TOC overcomes the challenges. This would probably help newbies understand and appreciate the direction of the solution; by visual depiction.
Many Supply Chain change initiatives fail due to change management issues (resistance and lack of top management commitment / involvement and patience to see it through) as well as lack of follow through to achieve the targeted To-Be State. Hence many initiatives are mostly Brownian motion in nature; much movement but minimal long term positive effect.
Implementing TOC needs not only buy-in but also long term commitment at all levels in an Organization, and hopefully this book educates and inspires people to do the right thing.
Team Vector Consulting, keep it up!! Looking forward to more such books that address challenges in other industries.
The central argument in the book is founded on the works of various system thinkers (rightfully acknowledged in the preface). The authors have succeeded in presenting the application of such a difficult management concept to the readers without relying on any jargons or buzzwords. The book is clearly derived from a host of experience that the authors have had in the corporate world and hence it is filled with characters and instances that audience can easily relate to. One area where the book could have been better is in providing more details on how this transformation may be achieved or what tools can enable the readers to apply this solution in their workplace.
Apart from automotive industry folks, this book is for anyone who is interested in supply chain management or for those readers who are keen on understanding the impact of systems thinking on the industry. There is enough content to pique your curiosity and the references provide sufficient pointers on further readings on this topic.
So far the world had only one Jonah as a savior, who can lead us from chaos to harmony; but with ‘Apparent in Hindsight’ the readers witness the birth of two such Jonahs – Sunil and Majumdar. Waiting to see more adventures from both of them!
Although the Indian Automotive industry has been used as an example it applies to any company which is into manufacturing & supply of goods.
The best part is that various concepts and solutions are discussed in a very simple manner without any jargon ! A number of examples are also used to explain the logic behind the issues and the solution to be implemented.
Those who have worked in the Industry will relate to the realistic verbalisation of the problems and the simple yet powerful solution.
Those who haven't worked in Industry, may read this to get an understanding of how companies continue living with the same problems for years.
Although the title refers to Auto industry but i believe the problems are prevalent across industries.
A S Rana
A must read for all Auto professionals
