I just posted the above review as informational. The device was way out of warranty, and I expected nothing. However, I forgot about Anker's excellent customer service. They contacted me about the non-functional device and asked to send a replacement. I was very surprised. I buy Anker products as a matter of choice because of the quality and because they stand behind their products. I never would have expected to receive a replacement on this item. But, they did, and the replacement works great! I am revising this review to five stars.
I got this to plug in to the USB card in the back of my PC so I can easily plug in devices on top of my desk. The only drawbacks are: the the USB cable is way too short, only 3 feet. It did not reach the top of my desk, so I had to buy a JacobsPats 5 Feet USB 3.0 Type A to Type B Male Cable in its place. It does not have power button for manual control as it states in the description, but that's alright because it only powers on when you plug in a device in it, and stays powered off when not in use. And It's made out of very lightweight plastic so it can very easily fall off a desk and crash on the floor but I fixed that by cementing small rubber pads on the bottom of each corer to it doesn't move so easily. But for me, its performance is more important and outweighs those drawbacks.
Something to note is that your USB devices will stick out a little bit as can be seen from the photo (The USB port doesn't go all the way inside the hub)
This design makes pulling tiny USB sticks out effortless. However this affects how tightly held the devices are. Short USB sticks won't wobble, but longer ones like my Asus Wifi adapter will. Not enough wobble to bend or break the USB though, so no worries here.
Before buying this one, I had my eyes on the Anker 13 ports hub which runs 12V 5A. The reason why I went with this one is because you technically get more output of each slot since this is 12V 2A for 4 ports. And also for the fact that you connect your USBs horizontally, whereas the 13 ports hub is vertical.
I'm happy with this adapter and I'm thinking of buying another one
I'll edit this review if I come across any problem
The thing is way too big for what it is, and it's too light to feel durable in a bag. I'm not sure what the intended use case is, but I guess other people like it for some reason. I'm curious as to the Mechanical Turk spend to pump up these reviews.
In case you're wondering, 12V is a completely worthless statistic. Why, you may ask, is it in there? Because when you're skimming results 12V looks a lot like 12W. 12W is important because it's enough power to charge an iPad plugged into it while you're using it - say as a second display. They throw the amps on there too, and 2a is also a good enough value for that to get the job done.
This power supply does none of those things. It's probably fine as a USB 3 hub, but since it's not durable it would have to be for home desktop use only.
Customer service was awesome, and are going to send me something that does more of what I thought this one would. I'm bumping the review to 3 stars since it's fine for what it is (I had no dead ports on mine), I just wish that they would explicitly state that it's only meant for data transfer and not charging.
