Our son is Hearing Impaired. Prior to viewing movies on Amazon Prime's Streaming Service our son used to see only the Movies with hardly any knowledge about the dialogues that were going on, with subtitles for the movies he has really started enjoying the movies as well. I appreciate this feature the most.
1.0 out of 5 starsRemote control isn’t working in just 2 months of my purchase
28 September 2018
Just want to keep this feedback simple. The remote control that comes with the bundle has stopped working in just 2 months of my purchase and isn’t functional inspite of changing the batteries. This is pretty frustrating. No idea what to do. Worst, Amazon sells it separately for Rs 1999.
The fire stick is a very good product! However, my remote has been driaining out overnight. I have to keep the batteries removed at all times. Only before watching I have to put them. This is very inconvenient. There is no way I can contact the seller to get it replaced or checked. The fire stick also hangs sometimes. I don’t know how long it will be useful anymore. Need help. If this problem is solved, then it would be great. Very happy with it otherwise.
Amazon firestick is costlier than chromecast. The only effective additional feature of this device to chromecast is Bluetooth connectivity of headsets and speakers.
Youtube application runs from a browser installed on the firestick (Firefox or Silk by AMZN) and there is no voice search in youtube. The firestick remote control has to be the most horrible human computer interaction of this century!
Do not expect a pleasant experience with any of the Google products! Since they are a direct competitor in most home user hardware by AMZN. (Firestick and Echo of the top of my head).
I brought Amazon Fire stick around Nov-end 2017. Strangely, with very low/moderate usage, the remote has already consumed 7 sets of branded batteries (all new) in under 4 months! This even includes high end batteries like Duracell besides routine Eveready.
Not sure if other users are facing the same issues? Guess specific remote may be faulty. Any idea how this can be fixed or replaced (still under warranty).
Please download and install the latest Fire OS version 220.127.116.11. From the Home Screen, go to Settings>About>Device and select Check for Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update.
After the update is installed, please remove the old batteries from the remote and insert fresh batteries before using it again.
The user interface can be a whole lot better. Its several clicks to get where you want, especially when the apps in it aren't design with good UI as well. Several of the popular apps zee5, Hotstar et all, designed for touch interface are a pain here... since you've to input with keyboard. Esp when you want regional language programs, then the default layouts have a lot of clutter forcing you to filter each time. Don't expect your mom's/dad's without tech expertise to use this like a breeze.
Here is some feedback for the fire stick dev team:
While Amazon has no control over apps developed by third party, it could have made things easy for the user by allowing voice input with a facility to spell letters whereever the keyboard input is required. The reason is the voice remote works well for English only, if you need to say something in a regional language, it doesn't help at all. Hence a voice spelling mode could have gone a long way. Couple that with a cache (per app, per input field) where earlier spellings autopopulate frequencies wise like in a webpage form, will make things easier when the apps aren't designed that well.
This is a below average product being sold at a higher price in Indian market. Remote is quite flimsy and if you use voice control often it sucks out the battery quickly. I am writing this review here to rant about the negatives only. With only 1 gb ram and less than 8 gb usable storage means you can't install lot of apps. The processing power of the stick is quite average and sufficient only to display 1080p content. Remote doesn't have ir or volume buttons so you need your TV remote handy. Typing anything using the firestick remote is a pain. With this price range the product competes against Google chromecast and certainly beats it in lot of areas. However it is very far behind the experience you geton a android TV box. This firestick gets slow with time and the only way to optimize it is hard reset. Buy this only if you are getting it in a sale around 2-2.5 k. Amazon has launched the new firestick 4k which has improved specs competing with firetv cube their own lineup. Even though you won't be using 4k capability on your full HD TV, I would still recommend to get it because of its power and better remote.
After 17 months of great Service, my fire stick breathed it's last, trapped in its own dreams, booting and rebooting, still trying to optimise it's system. You redefine d entertainment for me. I'm addicted to streaming now more than T V. Said good bye to piracy. Made my dumb TV smart. I wish you had more juice in you, 3-4 years atleast. I wish you had volume control on remote and better power management. Wish 3rd party developers on your store had more sense to build user friendly interfaces. But my boy it was a hell of ride. Sayonara.
1) good internet connectivity, bandwidth and volume to efficiently use this product - To make use of this product effectively it is very essential you have good internet connectivity and bandwidth. All movies / serials or any clippings that you would see would be streamed live using your internet 2) mirroring - the device would also help you mirror your mobile or laptop helping view what you see on your mobile or laptop on to the TV screen 3) subscriptions - to view contents on Netflix, hotstar, amazon prime and other apps its very essential that you subscribe to them. Which means additional cost 4) Please do not expect this to substitute your direct broadcast satellite television ( Tata sky, videocon d2h and so on). Independently, this product provides an interface to connect to the internet, making it available for live streaming. 5) Gift card with the product - I was extremely unhappy with the gift card provided with the product. Its a zero value gift card. I need to load a minimum of Rs 1000 to use it. 6) I was happy about the cash back offer which helped me save Rs 300 ( approx) 7) the remote feels flimsy, being Bluetooth is going to exhaust the batteries soon 8) to use the youtube app with the firestick remote is a pain as typing for search would get frustrating 9) to find out how to mirror the mobile phone was frustrating.
After about 6 months of use, here is a consolidated review which has both ups and downs.
Product is great and you get what you see which is that it connects to an HDMI port, a power port and WiFi and makes that TV a smart TV. Using remote, you can easily view/browse content from Youtube, several other apps and ofcourse Amazon Prime.
Testing on dummy system (Samsung smart LED TV) I connected it to my own smart TV and it worked without a glitch, the HW setup was fairly smooth and connection/wifi happened fairly quickly. Device comes with an HDMI extender cable which is great for models which may not have much space otherwise to accommodate fire stick. UI while smooth has two big problems : a. if like me, you have amazon account in multiple countries, you need to follow an elaborate process online to register your firestick with correct country. Since many folks get firestick for corresponding prime account, this is something to keep in mind which I felt could have been simplified. I actually spent 2 days first on my fire stick and then online before I could get it to work as intended. b. that it searches for content across all the apps including the ones for which you may not have subscription. This is a problem for seniors or kids who may not understand that any search listing might be paid/free. Adding an option in SW to limit the apps included in search will help a lot here.
For above experience I will deduct one star, amazon fire stick is meant for dumbing down internet content and length account setup and including paid results in search goes against it.
Testing on real system (Sony non-smart TV, 8 year old model) What I noticed however is that fire stick does not work with all old TVs and compatibility section is a bit vague. In my case, I really meant for it to be used with Sony Bravia KLV-26BX320, an eight year model that my parents use. TV is fairly modern for its time with 2 HDMI ports and even HDMI control support. However when I connected it (with/without extender cable) I kept getting 'unsupported format' message. I could see the device in HDMI device list but clearly the HDMI format of fire stick was not compatible with my Sony Bravia TV.
I feel like this situation could have been easily avoided if there were a list of unsupported TVs on fire stick display page. The compatibility section is worded "high-definition TVs with HDMI capable of 1080p or 720p at 60/50Hz, including popular HDCP-compatible models", it would help if there is a clear wording for non-compatible models so folks like dont end up buying this. Even better if fire stick could increase support for legacy HDMI formats since that is a big part of intended use case for this model (to make old TVs smart).
Testing on really old system (LG non-smart display, 10+ year old model) With Sony TV not working with Fire stick as expected, I am now going to test it with an HDMI-VGA converter with an even older display, will provide updates.
